5 Recipes for Making the Best Natural Lip Balms!

Sneha Singh

Do you find skincare always just a bit too complicated? The most common ingredients in skincare products spell several side effects on the skin, such as parabens causing rashes and cracked brittle skin with repeated use. If they can be that harsh on regular skin, what about your lips?

Your lips always need some extra TLC. It’s not just because the skin on the lips is the most delicate. Lips don’t produce self-moisturizing oils or melanin either – something super-essential for blocking sun rays.

So are there any alternatives besides a complicated ingredient list?

Yes, indeed – replace waxy drugstore lip products with organic lip balms! Making lip balms is quite low-effort, and you can customize the scent and nutrients to fit your requirements.

Why do I need lip care?

Your ultra-sensitive lips need all the love and care they can get. They always face the harshest effects of climate and environmental factors. Think about it:

  • While you use your lips to eat, talk, and pucker up, they’re also constantly exposed to sun, pollution, and dust.
  • Winters and arid weather dry out your lips, causing chapped, cracked lips extremely prone to bleeding.
  • Chapped lips can shrivel up and develop deep creases, unnecessarily ageing your appearance.
  • Licking your lips solves the problem only momentarily. It’s actually counter-productive: whenever you lick your lips, the saliva evaporates quickly. With that, the air sucks up all the moisture from your lips, leaving them drier than before!

That’s why you need a lip balm you can trust. And why won’t you, if you’ve tailored it to perfection according to your needs? While several lip balms are out there in the market, you know exactly what’s going into your homemade lip balms!

Best DIY organic lip balms

If you’re thinking about making lip balm at home, start with a small batch of beeswax. It’s a great base ingredient to make natural lip balms because it helps seal in moisture and keep your lips soft and supple for longer. You can also easily mix and match different ingredients and maintain the exact texture you need to make an easy-to-apply lip balm at home.

Keeping that in mind, let’s dive into some DIY natural lip balms to make at home!

1.Beeswax and coconut lip balm

This is a simple, DIY sweet, and hydrating lip balm that yields perfect results. Wax and coconut oil lock in moisture and keep your lips supple. Vitamin E boosts circulation and promotes new cell growth.

Steps:

  1. In a boiler, add 1 tablespoon of grated beeswax and melt it down halfway.
  2. To the half-melted beeswax, add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and 1 teaspoon of raw honey. Continue melting the mixture.
  3. Blend the ingredients and add two capsules of Vitamin E.
  4. Once cooled, pour it into a tin and use it whenever your lips feel dehydrated.

2.Tinted ghee lip balm

The staple of every Indian household can double as a hydrating base for homemade lip balm for pink lips. With just a bit of beetroot, you can make a nourishing, tinted ghee lip balm. The beet chemicals give your lips a natural pinkish tint. Ghee hydrates your lips and locks in moisture, making it one of the best natural lip balms for daily use.

Steps:

  1. Grate ½ a cup of beetroot and strain the juice with a cheesecloth.
  2. Add 1 tsp of ghee and mix with the beetroot juice thoroughly.
  3. Pour it into a container for lip balm and refrigerate it.
  4. Use whenever your lips feel dry!

3.Fresh sugar lip balm/scrub

This recipe uses brown sugar, white sugar, honey, and olive oil for a refreshing lip scrub. While brown sugar has anti-bacterial properties and Vitamin B, white sugar acts as a moisturizer and anti-sun damage agent. Honey and olive oil have multiple nutrients and work as anti-inflammatory and regenerative agents, respectively.

Steps:

  1. Mix 1 teaspoon each of white sugar, brown sugar, and honey, and ½  a teaspoon of olive oil.
  2. Once you’ve evenly mixed them, apply to your lips and massage for 20 seconds.
  3. Wash gently and enjoy soft and hydrated lips all day!

4.Mango butter lip balm

Using the goodness of mango butter, beeswax, coconut oil, and your favorite essential oil, this is one of the best natural lip balms to make at home. For this recipe, let’s use lavender essential oil.

Steps:

  1. Take 1 tablespoon each of mango butter, beeswax, and coconut oil. Mix them in a steel bowl.
  2. Put the bowl in a double boiler system to make the ingredients heat slowly and combine evenly.
  3. To the combined mixture, add 15 drops of lavender essential oil.
  4. Add it to a tube or container and let it cool for future use.

5.Mint choco lip balm

While the flavor itself is highly debated from “tastes like toothpaste with chocolate” to “tastes great!”, the ingredients work very well for a homemade lip balm. The essential oils provide much-needed hydration. The cocoa powder acts as a mild exfoliating agent.

Steps:

  1. Use a double boiler system to melt 2 teaspoons of beeswax.
  2. Add 1 teaspoon of cocoa powder and mix till the solution is smooth.
  3. While stirring continuously, add 1 teaspoon of sweet almond oil and a few drops of peppermint oil.
  4. Let it cool. Pour it into a container and use it whenever your lips desperately need some delicious hydration.

Not only are DIY organic lip balms fun to make, but they also help you test out what ingredients work best for you! So grab all the necessary ingredients and get creative. The best lip care is in your hands now!
