A Deep Dive into the Fragrant World of Natural and Non-Toxic Perfumes
Sonal Trivedi
The world we live in today is making more health and skin-conscious choices and moving towards everything natural and organic, and maybe you are also aboard this all-natural product train. But, not many of you know that the skincare products, especially perfumes that you use, which are marketed as “Natural”, often contain petroleum-based ingredients and other things that are harmful for daily use. Let’s take a closer look to understand the few elements in natural perfumes and look at some of the organic perfume options you can find on Purplle.
Natural Perfume Ingredients
As you might have figured out, natural perfumes are made from ingredients derived from nature. These ingredients include everything from isolates, natural fragrances and other components. The list of ingredients that are combined to make non toxic perfumes are:
1. Wildcrafted and Organic Essential Oils
These Organic and Wildcrafted essential oils are an integral component of every healthy perfume. They are essential oils distilled from plants that do not undergo the use of pesticides. Wildcrafted essential oils are derived from native, organic, and wild plants. What makes them even more interesting is that they are harvested using non-chemical and sustainable methods. Some of the most commonly used essential oils are:
- Jasmine Essential Oil
- Rose Essential Oil
- Rosemary Essential Oil
- Lavender Essential Oil
- Lavender, Spike Essential Oil
2. Carbon Dioxide (CO2 ) Extracts
Like Essential Oils, CO2 extracts are aromatic substances used to make herbal perfumes. However, they are extracted by passing carbon dioxide through aromatic plants. Under high mechanical pressure, the carbon dioxide is compressed until it becomes “supercritical” carbon dioxide, neither a gas nor a liquid, but possesses the properties of both states of matter. In this supercritical state, CO2 acts as a gentle and pure solvent.
The beauty of using this extraction method is that the carbon dioxide completely evaporates, leaving zero residues and requiring no heat for the extraction. And the resulting oil has a more flowery aroma than what can be achieved by traditional essential oils. CO2 extracts can be of two different strengths, that are:
- Carbon Dioxide Select Extracts – use lower pressure, and the resulting oil is similar to an essential oil as the lighter elements and fragrances are only extracted.
- Carbon Dioxide Total Extracts – use higher pressures to dissolve higher amounts of plan components. The results can be thicker and waxier, which resembles the plant as a whole rather than a few of its fragrant elements.
3. Floral Absolutes
Almost all the essential oils available on the market can be extracted as floral absolutes, a vital component of many organic scents. Floral absolutes are processed in the second stage of a two-stage harvesting process. The harvested blooms are put through solvent extraction in the first stage, where we get floral concentrates.
In the second step of the process, odourless fats that are solid at room temperature are subjected to the remains of the harvested blooms to capture the fragrances exuded by the plants. The second step is traditionally known as enfleurage and can either be a hot or cold process.
4. Natural Isolates
They are naturally occurring chemicals in different volumes in different oils. These natural isolates are responsible for how the oils smell and taste and are essential components in aromatherapy. Natural isolates are extracted from plants or oils using a fractionation process. They are generally gathered using the most non-invasive methods of extraction.
