Making your own shampoo can be a journey of discovery. Not only do you get to decide what goes in your cauldron, but the excitement of putting in a bit of this and a dash of that is unsurpassable. Of course, that is if you don’t count the expression of joy on your face when you run your fingers through your cascading, lustrous tresses! And to think that it's a homemade shampoo for hair!

When deciding on the perfect shampoo recipe, stinging nettle comes to mind. It is an amazing ingredient and can do wonders for your hair. But when you pair this wonderful ingredient with coconut, exciting times are ahead! Ready to stir up a storm in your cauldron? Let’s begin!

Stinging nettle

Stinging nettle has many health benefits. And it is also known for its beneficial effects on hair and scalp, making it the ideal choice for homemade shampoo for hair growth. It may surprise you to know that this plant was used in ancient times as a beauty and health facilitator. And while it is not something you come across in your everyday life, your grandma will probably know the benefits of rinsing your hair with nettle. So, how does stinging nettle help your hair? Let’s find out.

Stinging nettle benefits

Protects your hair from free radicals

The body produces harmful free radicals. An unhealthy diet and lifestyle along with toxins from the environment and the ageing process trigger an increase in free radicals. Nettle contains antioxidants such as flavonoids and carotenoids, besides vitamins to protect hair from damaging free radicals.

Treats hair loss

Topical application of nettle shampoo combats hair loss. Nettle tea or capsules too help treat hair loss when taken internally.

Helps regrowth of hair

Stinging nettle contains high amounts of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. They prevent scalp damage and also stimulate the growth of hair. Nettle shampoos can help in the regrowth of hair. A simple rinse with cold nettle tea can help hair regrow.

The wondrous coconut

This fruit has countless health benefits. Packed with nutrients, it is said to help keep your hair, skin and nails in perfect condition. So, how does coconut milk/oil help your hair? Let’s find out!

Coconut oil benefits

Acts as a barrier

The nutrient content of coconut isn’t very high, but it still has umpteen benefits when used topically. It protects the scalp and hair and acts as a barrier that controls bacteria and other irritants that can cause damage to the scalp and hair.

Tip: This can also be used to make the ideal homemade shampoo for dry hair.

Moisturizes the hair and scalp

Coconut oil contains lauric acid that has nourishing properties. Coconut oil is a great moisturizer. It is absorbed quickly into the scalp and hair shaft and helps you deal with breakage and frizzy hair.

Contains no chemicals

Coconut oil contains no harmful additives or chemicals, making it ideal for making homemade herbal shampoo for hair growth. It is safe even for sensitive skins.

 High in protein and vitamins

The high amounts of protein in coconut is beneficial for hair growth and has the potential to keep your hair healthy and strong. As your hair is made of keratin, which is a kind of protein, coconut is your ingredient of choice.

Coconut is high in vitamins C, E, B-1, B-3, B-5, and B-6. These nutrients are ideal for maintaining healthy, strong and moisturized hair.
