Difference Between Cologne and Perfume

Sonal Trivedi

Colognes and Perfumes are both fragrances designed to be worn on the skin. This is where their similarities end. The differences between perfume and cologne are based on the strength and choice of essential oils used.

Cologne is often referred to as a gentleman’s scent due to its historical popularity among men. But why does cologne smell so different from perfume? Let’s take a look at the subtle differences between them!

What’s the Difference Between Cologne and Perfume?

At the outset, the difference between perfume and cologne is mainly based on the volume of essential oils utilised in the fragrances. Cologne has a lower concentration of fragrance oils than perfume. This is why cologne smells lighter, less intense, and doesn't last as long as perfumes. Cologne is often described as a fresh, lighter fragrance that is good for everyday use. The fragrance of the cologne is typically heavier than that of an aftershave lotion but lighter than a perfume.

In contrast, perfumes have a higher concentration of scent oils. A perfume smells much stronger and is typically worn on special occasions.

Who Wears Them?

The lightest fragrance concentration (Eau de Cologne), along with other conventionally masculine scents like musk was promoted exclusively for men in the 20th century, to get them to wear fragrance. However, this is a false impression that cologne was designed to appeal to men. More and more fragrances are being classified as unisex today.

What are Perfume Notes?

The essence or the middle notes of a perfume are often referred to as the heart of the fragrance. Every fragrance is created using a mixture of various essential oils. These essential oils can be categorized into the top, middle, and base notes.

The top notes are the scents we detect right away after applying perfume. Common fragrances used include citrus, berries, and lavender

The middle notes are the scents that arrive after the top note of the fragrance has faded. They also mingle with the base notes and have a significant impact on them. Common fragrances used include nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamon

Base notes are the last scent notes that emerge just before the middle notes have completely faded away. Common fragrances include sandalwood, vanilla, and musk

What gives each person their unique scent is the culmination of all these essential oils or fragrance notes. To extend the longevity of our perfumes, we need to apply a perfume mist or perfume oil to our bodies. The mist or oil will help lock in the scent of our perfume to make it last longer.

How do Essential Oils Contribute to Fragrance Type?

Essential oils are the natural extracts of botanical plants. The differences between cologne and perfume can be identified by their scents. Gentle scents, like lavender, rosemary, mint, and sage are typically found in colognes. Meanwhile, heavier scents, such as sandalwood and patchouli, are often found in perfumes. Because concentrated essential oils have a strong scent, they are diluted with alcohol and water in specific ratios to create a variety of fragrances.

Fragrance Types

1. Perfumes

A perfume is a fragrance that is applied to the skin. It is often made up of a blend of essential oils, synthetic fragrance ingredients, and a solvent such as alcohol. A perfume can be worn to enhance our mood, smell, and presence. It’s often described as an experience as opposed to an everyday smell.

Concentration level: 20-30%. The scent of perfume lingers for 6-8 hours.

2. Eau de Parfum

The scent of Eau de Parfum depends on the type of essential oil used and how much of that essential oil is used in the product. Eau de Parfum comes in a variety of scents and is considered to be lighter versions of the same scents as perfume. Eau de Parfum can vary greatly in quality, so it's important to test the scents on our skin before we buy them.

Concentration Level: 15-20%. Eau de Parfum lingers for 5-6 hours.

3. Eau de Toilette

Eau de Toilette is a perfume that is usually made from alcohol, water, oil, and fragrance. Eau de Toilette has the same components as Eau de Parfum, but it uses less of each ingredient. The use of alcohol in Eau de Toilette gives it that distinctive smell. It may also contain other ingredients such as glycerin and water. The concentration of alcohol will affect how strong the scent will be. If we want more subtle scents, we need to choose ones with less alcohol content.

Concentration Level: 5-15%. The scent of Eau de Toilette lingers for 4-5 hours.

4. Cologne

Technically, the term cologne refers to a very light perfume oil concentration that contains more alcohol and only lasts for a couple of hours. These are great for a quick pick-me-up but not for all-day wear.

Concentration Level: 2-4%. The scent of cologne lingers for 2-3 hours.

5. Eau Fraiche

Rich, lingering perfume scents aren't for everyone. There are multiple high-quality options available for those of us who prefer subtle scents; in fact, there is an entire category for them called Eau Fraiche. It is the lightest of all scents These barely perceptible scents typically tend to smell fresh, focusing on notes that are crisp and vibrant

Concentration Level: 1-3%. The scent of Eau Fraiche lingers for 1-2 hours.

How do I Pick Concentrations?

A high-quality perfume may come at a shockingly high price, however, you may find it worth it. Fragrances that are less concentrated than high-quality perfumes will mostly come in a spray bottle.

The key to wearing fragrances is to wear the correct fragrance for our body chemistry. To find out what fragrance is best for us, we can wear a few different fragrances and wait for the compliments to roll in. This will help us determine what fragrances work best with our body chemistry.

As a general rule, lighter fragrances are best for daytime use, while stronger fragrances are better for nighttime. Hence we can pick a concentration based on the time and occasion.
