How to quickly apply fake eyelashes at home?

Sneha Singh

Whoever said makeup comes easy probably never had to deal with false eyelashes. Nothing beats long, fluttering eyelashes that instantly make you look more energetic and make you the belle of the ball. But as alluring as the idea of lash extensions sound, it is equally complicated to master its smooth, flawless application. If the precision scale tips on either side, your fake eyelashes could end up doing the opposite of their purpose. They could look crooked with ends turned up or even not gel well with the natural lashes. To prevent any such mishaps, all you need is a bit of experience and knowledge. And there's no better teacher than yourself. So, get ready to get your glam look on by following these steps.

Step 1 - Choose your lash extensions

Even though your extensions might look the same on your computer screen, they are definitely made for different eye shapes and sizes. Available in different types and colours, choose the fake eyelash set that will suit you best. You will usually find them in full strips, individual clumps or three-quarter pieces. Based on your eye shape, you can select the most appropriate pair of lashes. For mono lids and upturned or downturned eyes, go for a short eyelash set with more volume on the outer corners. For round eyes, you will want curled lashes and for hooded eyes, choose long, fluttery eyelashes. If you have the space for some dramatic addition, you might go for custom eyelashes adorned with feathers or rhinestones.

Step 2 - Work on your natural eyelashes

This is an important step and can help your original and fake eyelashes blend a lot better. Put on your basic eye makeup like concealer or eyeshadow and then curl your lashes. Leave the eyeliner as you can apply it afterwards to help the line of fake extensions blend in nicely. Similarly, mascara can also be applied after the fake eyelash is on.

Step 3 - Trim your falsies

It is quite possible that the falsies are actually bigger than your real eye shape and some portion of it ends up hanging outside in the end. To avoid such a situation, you will need to place the extension on your eyelid and get an approximate idea of the size. Trim it accordingly. We will recommend beginners to try this on a cheap eyelash set first.

Step 4 - Shape your false eyelashes

Packed in a box, you are not likely to receive the fake set in the desired shape. Keeping in mind that these extensions are extremely delicate, shape them with your fingers gently. One way to do that is by wrapping the extension's spine around your finger or the back portion of a makeup brush. If the spine still isn't loosened, run your fingernail over it to give a curling shape.

Step 5 - Correctly apply the glue

The next step includes strategically applying the lash adhesive. Even though white glue will dry clear, the better option is to use dark shaded or black glue so that any leftover product seamlessly blends in the lashes. Now, don't just put a lot of it on the strip at once. Take a cotton bud and spread a very little amount of glue on the lash's spine. Don't immediately put it on. Wait for nearly 30 seconds so that it dries a little and gets tacky. You can try letting the ends join to ensure that they get an adequate amount of glue.

Step 6 - Apply the lashes with the help of an applicator

You could either use your fingers or tweezers as an eyelash applicator. Try holding the lash and figure out which option works better for you. Carefully, plop the lash on your upper lash line where you'd usually put eyeliner. Keep in mind that looking down at the mirror will work better instead of looking straight ahead. Make sure the extensions are not tangled from any specific place. Do not close your eyes during the eyelash application as it might result in a change of shape.

Step 7 - Final touch-ups

If the corners are not stuck properly, use a toothpick to put some extra glue. To hide the spine of your fake eyelashes and fill in any gap, apply liquid eyeliner. If needed, use an eyelash curler to collectively shape both eyelashes together. Apply a coat of mascara and you are good to go! Note that applying mascara means that you won't be able to reuse the falsies more than a couple of times because of hygiene issues.

How To Remove False Eyelashes?

Remember, do not just try ripping off the falsies to quickly wrap up your night-time makeup removing routine. It might harm your natural eyelashes and cause some pain while you are at it. A better option would be to wet a cotton ball with some makeup remover or coconut oil and hold it over your eyes. You can also use a soaked cotton swab by running it over your lash line. It will loosen the glue and you can gently remove the fake lashes. If not, repeat the process with the cotton ball till you can remove the lashes easily.
