How to Shave Chest Hair: A Perfect Guide for Men

Sonal Trivedi

With warmer months approaching, it’s time for the sun and sea. Your summer body might be great, but a bit of manscaping can make it look even better! For men shaving their chest for the first time in a long time, here are a few tricks to help you out.

Do you need to shave your chest hair?

The short answer? Not really.

Chest hair isn’t necessarily unattractive, but there are plenty of people who like to shave it off or trim it for a variety of reasons.

  • While looks aren't a priority, some men like the hairless chest look because it looks neater and more manageable.
  • A Lack of hair on your chest can help your muscle definition truly shine. All your hard work at the gym is even more obvious with a clean-shaven chest.
  • Sometimes, chest hair can be annoying, especially when it’s poking out of your shirt. Trimming or shaving prevents those pesky strands from peeping out unattractively.
  • Swimmers will often shave to streamline their bodies.

How to Shave Chest Hair

Step 1: Take a hot shower

A hot shower is an essential step to get your body prepared for a shaving session. It opens up all your pores and helps clean your hair thoroughly. A soft scrub gets rid of any surface-level dirt and grime. With a quick hot shower, your chest is ready to get shaved.

Step 2: Trim your chest hair

Trying to shave through dense growth is not easy or healthy for your skin. Not only does it dull your razor faster, but it can also cause redness and irritation on the skin.

If you are not looking for a clean-shaven look, a trimmer is exactly what you need. If you’re not sure how to trim chest hair, start by adjusting your guard to a wider setting and trimming off the denser parts. To clean up, use a narrower setting to fade out the edges so that it transitions smoothly into your skin.

For those who want a clean shave, trim your entire chest to an even width - just not too close to the skin, else your razor is going to cause some ingrown hair.

Step 3: Shower with warm water

A warm water shower is ideal for shaving. Rinse off any excess hair and lather your skin with a shaving gel.

Step 4: Shave away

Start shaving in sections. Make sure that you always shave in the direction of your hair to avoid any ingrown hair. Rinse off your razor in between sections or your blade will get clogged.

Be careful with your razor, especially around your nipples. Never go over your nipples in one motion; instead, use gentle strokes around them for a painless shave.

Make sure you have enough light in the room to catch any missed spots. A mirror is always useful in this step!

Step 5: Wash with cold water

Wash away all the stray hair with cold water. This will help tighten your pores so that you can avoid damaging them when they’re sensitive.

Step 6: Pat dry

Once you’re done shaving, pat your skin dry. Do not rub your skin with the towel as it is still sensitive. The irritation will leave your skin red and could also cause bumps, which is definitely not the look you’re going for.

Step 5: Moisturize

You’ve just shaved your chest hair and your skin is fairly sensitive and dry. A lightweight, cooling moisturizer is an essential step to keep your skin looking smooth and radiant.

With that, you’re done! A little bit of manscaping never goes amiss, whether you just want to trim your chest hair or shave it all off. If you keep all our tips and tricks in mind while shaving your chest hair, you can show off your smooth, defined chest this summer. So grab everything you need and shave your way to glory!
