Learn How to Remove Gel Nail Polish at Home
Aayushi Mehra
Applying gel nail polish is one of the most popular nail polish trends at the moment, and for good reasons. Not only does it last much longer than regular nail polish, but it also seems to grow stronger with time. This means when you need a mani or just want to change your nail colour, removing gel polish can be a daunting task.
Gel polish is a polymer that’s very similar to acrylic nails, but instead of being applied to the nails, it’s bonded onto the nail with strong, durable chemicals. Because of this, it’s very hard to remove without causing nail damage. If you’re not careful, you may even chip your nails. However, with a bit of patience and research, you can learn how to remove gel polish at home.
Best of all, you can avoid the high cost of salon manicures. Continue reading to learn how you can remove gel polish.
Steps to Remove Gel Nail Polish at Home
- Trim your nails - It is easier to remove gel nail polish if your nails are shorter. Clip as much of the white part of your fingernails as you can to avoid having to deal with removing polish from the most difficult areas.
- Prepare your nails - Before you attempt to remove gel polish, make sure that your nails are free of any oils, lotions or detergents.
- Get the top coat off - The next step is to file the top coat of your nail polish, this is an important step to break the seal and enable the nail polish remover to penetrate the nail polish.
- Protect your cuticles - When moisture gets into the nail unit, it causes the new nail to develop abnormally. Coat the skin around your nails with cuticle oil to help protect your cuticles during the gel polish-removing procedure.
- Soak in acetone - To thoroughly remove gel polish, soak your nails in 100 percent acetone. Non-acetone nail polish remover is simply insufficient to remove the gel. If you use a non-acetone remover, you will have to apply more pressure that can result in damaged nails. Additionally, you will not be able to remove the product completely.
- Wrap each nail in foil - Soak cotton balls in 100% acetone and place one on each nail. Cotton balls absorb more cleanser than pads and better fit the fingernail shape, making gel polish cleanup faster. Then, cover each finger in a three-inch piece of foil. This will retain the acetone-soaked cotton on the fingernail and stop the chemical from evaporating.
- Wait for 10 minutes or more - This is perhaps the most crucial and time-consuming step in removing gel nail polish. To break the layers of polish, soak for a minimum of 10 minutes. Wrap a hot compress around your hand to help speed up the process — the warmth helps acetone work whilst loosening the polish.
- Gently rub off the polish - When you see the borders of the polish curling up, you've soaked long enough. When the gel is disintegrating or falling off, gently brush the polish from your nail plate with a rubber-ended cuticle pusher. If you need to use more intense pressure, repeat the soaking stage.
- Moisturise - To rehydrate your skin, massage your fingers in a warm hand lotion containing vitamin E oil or use a hand mask.
