Olive Oil for Hair: Benefits, Uses, and DIY Recipes

Sonal Trivedi

Oils and hair: a love story written in age-old scriptures! We are still reaping the benefits that come with the application of olive oil to our hair. If you do not use any oil for your hair care, we recommend changing that right away. Hair Care needs a natural lubricant or a conditioner, which can strengthen it right from the roots, and this is why there is a need for natural oils.

Don’t know if oils are the right way to go? And, which one should you choose?

Olive oil is rich in vitamins A and E, besides essential fatty acids. This is why it can benefit the fight against some pressing scalp care issues, such as:

  • Dandruff: If you are somebody who struggles from an itchy, dry scalp, olive oil can be what your scalp needs, like no other. It moisturizes your scalp, thus reducing the chances of dandruff and limiting the breeding of the fungus causing it in the first place. Yes, dandruff isn’t always caused by unclean and unkempt hair—the very oil that your skin glands secrete to moisturize the hair can get excessive, which leads to the growth of certain fungi.

However, when it’s not fungi that caused dandruff, the reason is usually hair damage hair due to dehydration, pollution, overusing hair products, not cleaning, etc. However, olive oil can resolve dandruff regardless of the factors leading to it. You can use a mix of olive oil and lemon for hair cleansing.

  • Split ends: Long hair problems, right! We all have to visit our scissors once every few months because of these weed-like growths. They limit our hair’s growth and look unkempt. However, with olive oil, there’s no need for a trim. Olive oil adds weight and moisture to each strand of hair. Moreover, vitamin A and E present in the oil repair each strand.

  • Strength and style: All oils do the job of making our hair incredible, shinier, stronger, better, but alas, also the terrible part: GREASIER! That’s why a lot of us refrain from oiling. However, when you purchase virgin olive oil, you will find that it gets absorbed by the scalp faster than other oils, which means it does not leave behind any greasiness. Thus, you get strength and style both!

  • Extra softness: A natural conditioner, olive oil prevents frizz and dryness in the scalp, improving your hair texture and removing tangles. The combination of honey and olive oil is highly hydrating. Olive oil and honey for hair growth is a time-tested recipe for a DIY hair mask.

  • Prevents hair loss: Baldness in men is attributed to the overproduction and release of the DTH hormone into the blood. Though it can’t be said conclusively, because of a lack of scientific research, a positive correlation has been found in olive oil and low production of DTH. For now, it is safe to assume that olive oil can prevent hair fall and stimulate your dead follicles into producing hair, which also leads to denser and better growth.

  • Lice: Though there are various lice treatment chemicals, masks, and shampoo available in the market, they all contain artificial chemicals which may harm your hair quality and quantity. Use olive oil instead as a natural cleanser.  Do keep in mind that in olive oil, the grading matters. There are three types of olive oils: extra virgin olive oil, virgin olive oil, and refined olive oil. You would need extra virgin olive oil to get rid of lice.

Depending on what you’re looking to treat with it, you can experiment with different olive oil masks. Here are some olive oil mask DIY recipes for you to try.
