Pre & post care while waxing - Purplle

Hair removal is not just a part of grooming but also of personal hygiene. While there are a lot of ways to remove body hair, waxing is one of the most popular hair removal solutions, albeit a painful one! Following a few tips and charting a basic routine for pre and post waxing skin care can help you make it a less hazardous experience.

1: Pre-waxing prep:

Before you take your waxing appointment or start your at-home waxing procedure, here are a few tips and tricks that will help in preparing your skin:

  • Examine your skin: Check your skin for any breakouts, rashes or inflammation. In case you see anything that’s causing your skin distress, wait it out and let it heal before going ahead with waxing.
  • Let it grow: Hair should be at least 1/4th of an inch before you schedule a waxing session. Shorter hair will not come in the grip of wax and can make the process more cumbersome. It is best to wait for 3-4 weeks between waxing sessions.
  • Cleansing: Make sure that you cleanse the area beforehand. This helps in removing excessive dirt and oil from skin, which comes in the way of waxing.
  • Exfoliate: It is advisable to exfoliate 24-48 hours before waxing. Use a gentle exfoliator and scrub out the ingrown hair. It helps in removing dead skin cells that may clog hair follicles.
  • Hydrate: A warm water soak for 5-10 minutes before waxing works wonders. It hydrates the skin and helps in faster hair removal. Pat it dry completely before waxing.
  • Moisturize: A water-based or oil-free moisturizer should be applied on skin before waxing. It prepares the skin and prevents burning or skin abrasions caused during waxing.

2: Post-waxing care:

Waxing leaves the skin sensitive for up to 36 hours following the procedure. Hence, it is important to follow certain skin care rituals post waxing to help the skin heal and make it stay hair-free for longer.

  • After-wax oils and lotions: As a rule, apply an after-wax oil or lotion. It not only helps in removing residual wax, but also soothes inflamed skin and replenishes the lost moisture.
  • Cold compress: A quick cold compress with ice cubes wrapped in a cotton towel helps immensely in reducing any redness and discomfort post waxing. You can also apply natural cooling gels like aloe vera or tea tree oil.
  • Exfoliate: It’s extremely important to exfoliate post waxing, but after a gap of 48 hours. Exfoliation helps in removing bumps and ingrown hair that can arise with regrowth. It also helps in maintaining the wax for a longer period of time.
  • Lastly, one must avoid activities like a steam bath, sauna or wearing synthetic clothing post a wax. Soft cotton clothes, which do not cause any skin irritation, are recommended post waxing.

FAQs:

Q1. How often does one need to wax?

Ans. Ideal time between waxing appointments should be 3-6 weeks, depending on your hair growth. Hair should be at least 1/4th of an inch for a good wax grip.

Q2. Does waxing remove hair permanently?

Ans. Waxing damages the hair follicles, slowing down the regrowth, and it may even eventually stop it from regrowing. However, waxing is not a permanent hair removal solution.

Q3. Should you trim your hair before waxing?

Ans. The ideal length of hair for waxing should be 1/4th of an inch. If the hair is longer than 3/4th of an inch, it will cause hindrance to waxing and will be a much painful procedure. It’s advised to trim hair if it is too long before you wax.
