How to Make Homemade Face Serums

You probably have a skincare routine where you cleanse, mask, tone, moisturize... But if you aren't using a face serum, are you truly doing everything it takes for glowing skin?

Serums deliver the most powerful active ingredients straight into your skin. So naturally, there are specialized serums for every available skin type out there. In case that quick Google search made you look into your wallet and sigh way too quickly, there’s an easy alternative for you – DIY serums! This article will take you through three hacks to make face serum right at home.

The Basic Three-Ingredient Face Serum

The combination of ingredients will vary depending on what your skin needs. But the most basic face serum popular among beginners needs just these three:

Open up the Vitamin E capsules and mix them with the liquid ingredients to make your first homemade face serum. It has several benefits:

  • Hydrating: Aloe Vera is known for hydration. It combines with the other two ingredients to get your skin glowing from within.
  • Cleansing: Rose water and Aloe gently cleanse your skin.
  • Anti-inflammatory: Rose water is key for reducing skin inflammation and flare-ups. Aloe vera reduces puffiness and Vitamin E fights dark spots.

Before using the DIY serum, conduct a patch test. And if it isn’t ideal for you? No fear! Several combinations could be your match.

The Mix-and-Match Face Serum

Most brands blend products from three classes of wonder ingredients: carrier oils, liquid ingredients, and essential oils. The right combination will work wonders for you, and give your skin type the customized care it needs:

1. Carrier oils

Essential oils are often very potent. Carrier oils balance them out. Their chemical makeup is like our natural sebum. They don't clog up your pores and instead enhance the natural goodness of your skin.

You can incorporate a few basic carrier oils into your DIY serum according to your skin type:

Combination skin:

Oily skin:

Dry skin:

2. Liquid ingredients

You can use another carrier oil in your homemade face serum or opt for other natural liquid ingredients. These could include:

  • Aloe Vera for hydration and cleansing
  • Rose water for anti-inflammation and cleansing
  • Glycerin for non-greasy moisturizing

These ingredients are also easily mixable even if you skip oils altogether. They can naturally cleanse and hydrate without leaving a heavy residue.

3. Essential oils

As we discussed, use these potent substances in moderation. You can choose essential oils according to what your skin needs, too:

Oily skin:

Dry skin:

Acne-prone skin:

When combining carrier oils and essential oils, remember to dilute essential oils to a large extent. Follow these ideal measurements when making face serum at home:

  • 1 tbsp carrier oil
  • 1 tbsp of another carrier oil or the liquid ingredient of your choice
  • 6–9 drops of essential oil

The Desi Essentials Face Serum

Want to go back to basics? Choose a combination of natural ingredients that any desi household will have.

  • Mix 2 tbsp of Aloe Vera and 1 tbsp of Turmeric to create a simple DIY serum for oily skin. If you want to totally avoid the grainy texture of Turmeric, a Turmeric essential oil gets you sorted!
  • For more youthful skin, combine Coconut Oil and Turmeric. 1 tbsp of Coconut Oil to ½ tbsp of Turmeric will create a serum that brings out a healthy glow within your skin. (P.S.: Don't use this combination daily if you have oily skin.)
  • Cinnamon and Honey might sound right at home on pancakes, but they’re also great for your skin! Cinnamon's antibacterial and antiseptic properties prevent acne and acne scars. That's your route to clearer skin! Mix 1 tbsp each of Cinnamon and honey and lightly massage this homemade face serum onto your skin.

This entire process comes with many benefits. When you make face serum at home, you:

  • Create unique face serums ideal for your skin type
  • Can customize according to your health needs
  • Control your expenditure and create something well within your budget
  • Can experiment with scents and oils in your own time

Most of all, you know your skin and its needs best! As long as you make sure to test the homemade serum on a patch of skin before applying it, you can control the exact nutrients that your skin receives. What you see someone recommend online may not always work for you. So, isn’t it best to take control of your skin with homemade recipes? DIY serums are a great way to help you learn what your skin needs. Keep experimenting till you find what fits you best!
