All You Need To Know About Facial Exfoliation
We have all heard the word “dead skin cells” sometime in our life or skincare journey! Well, sit back and get some popping corn because we are here to dive deep into it! Dead skin cells are shed by your skin to make space for new cells, and this phenomenon takes place every 21-30 days. Kinda like making room for that glow up you’ve been wanting! But hold up, sometimes this process doesn’t go so buttery smooth! Many times, it just so happens that the dead skin cells don’t shed completely. They stay back on the surface of our skin. This hampers your skin in a number of ways. The pores could get blocked, or your skin can even become flaky and dry depending on the skin type. So what’s the way out of it? We’re glad you asked!

Exfoliation! Facial Exfoliation is the answer to all dead skin cell issues! It is the process of removing the dead cells from the skin with the use of a chemical or physical substance, product or tool. This is just the start; there’s a lot that goes behind this technique, and here’s all you need to know!
Uncovering the world of Exfoliation

For the folks sitting in the back, we are going to go over it one more time! Facial Exfoliation is a way through which one can remove the dead skin cells present on the top layer of the skin. By removing this big chunk of clutter, your complexion brightens up, skin texture smoothens out, and skin products penetrate nice and easy into the deeper layers, in turn, making them work better!
Essentially, there are two types of Facial Exfoliation Methods.
Chemical & Mechanical Facial Exfoliation
In the first one, chemical ingredients like Alpha or Beta Hydroxy Acids are used to dissolve the dead skin cells and soften the skin layer to make them dissolve.

In the second one, a physical tool like a silicone exfoliator or even a washcloth is used as a facial scrub that helps in removing the dead skin cells like an extractor.

Your skin type really plays a great role in defining the type and way of facial exfoliation you should choose.
Facial Exfoliation Benefits

We have already talked a lot about what is and how is, but of course, we all want to know how something new benefits our skin. And gurl, you are in the right place because we are unravelling some hot sippy tea! Facial Exfoliation can prove to be a boon to your skin and improve it in multiple ways (we have studies backing this up)!
The major benefits of exfoliating are:
- It instantly removes dead skin cells, unveiling brighter, glowing skin
- It helps in improving blood circulation in the skin. With the dead skin cells getting out of the way, the new cells get all the power, helping your skin breathe lighter and better
- Facial exfoliation encourages skin cell turnover, keeping the premature signs of ageing at bay, all while making you look your youthful, confident self
- With the dead cells being gone, the absorption of skincare products like serums, moisturizers, toners becomes easier and faster. The product can penetrate into the skin and reach to deeper layers to impart maximum benefits
But wait.. How to Exfoliate?
1. Chemical Exfoliation

It might sound harsh, but chemical exfoliation is the softest, most gentle way to remove dead skin cells. It takes into account the chemically produced acids and works best for sensitive, dry & even combination skin types. You can either go for chemical exfoliants available in the market like skincare products. These include a minimal and definitive percentage of the particular chemical active and work tremendously well. Make sure to follow the directions of use given on the product packaging.
2. Mechanical or Physical Exfoliation

As we explained earlier, this one works by physically removing the dead skin cells from the topmost layer of the skin and sloughing them off. This method is comparatively less gentle than chemical exfoliation and works best for normal to oily skin types. One should avoid using physical exfoliation for sensitive or dry skin.
You can use products like exfoliating powders that help in removing the excess oil from the skin. One can also opt for dry brushing. This method involves using a brush with soft bristles, damping it and rubbing it gently across the skin.
Lastly, the ones blessed with normal skin would easily be able to exfoliate just with a washcloth dipped in warm water. Move the cloth in small circular motions around the face and dry your face later on.
