If there is one thing that can be both exciting as well as incredibly challenging, it is to learn how to dye your hair at home. Salon experiences can be pretty expensive and when one does not have enough resources to spend, dyeing your hair at home can be a fun experience. However, colouring your hair at home also requires some sort of hairstyling knowledge, dexterity and a stickler mind. Thus, we have assembled a guide that will help you colour your strands with a different hue.

How To Hair Dye At Home

Amongst all the methods you can use to dye your hair at home, using different hair colour boxes and natural dyes remains our favourite.  They are simple to use and effective. So given below are some hair dye tips at home for amazing, unique and beautiful coloured strands.

The Box Dye:

Whether you are opting for a crazy blonde or a warm-cool tint, one rule that is given when hair dyeing at home is that you always have to follow the instructions on the box. Read what’s on the back of your box, note down the important tips by looking at other videos and visual helping guides, and then start the process of dyeing your hair. Having said that, make sure that your hair hasn’t undergone any processes before you start colouring your hair, simply to minimise chemical damage. Furthermore, these are the tips you should follow before dyeing your hair at your place.

  • Don't wash your hair two days before you dye. You should let your natural oil secretion act like a barrier against irritation.
  • Do a strand test first. Apply your desired colour on an innermost strand of your hair and see how the colour looks (so that, if your experiment fails you can hide it from the prying eyes of the world easily). It will also help you factor in the timing that is usually mentioned on the box between two different time frames. For example, the finer your hair is, the faster it will lighten, so you may only need 5 minutes of the 5-10 minutes mentioned on the box.
  • Start applying the dye half-inch away from your scalp and work towards ends, as the heat from your hair makes the colour develop faster at the roots. So halfway through your journey, go back and colour your roots.
  • For highlights, start at the front and move towards the crown by sectioning out 10 quarter-inch wide pieces of your tresses instead of pulling out random pieces of your hair. You can also try using a toothbrush from roots to ends for your highlights to keep them more precise.

Use Natural Hair Dyes:

Did you know that many of our household items can also be used to naturally dye hair at home? A lot of people fear that traditional box dyes have harmful hair damaging chemicals in them like ammonia or parabens. Therefore, to avoid these chemicals, we can hair dye at home using these simple everyday ingredients.

  • Carrot Juice: If you are looking for a reddish-orange tint over your head, carrot juice can last for a few weeks depending upon the natural colour of your hair. Simply mix carrot juice with coconut or olive oil and then apply it evenly on your head or on parts where you want this hue to be set. Then wrap your head in plastic and let it sit for at least an hour before washing it with apple cider vinegar. You can repeat this step once more the next day for more satisfying results.

  • Henna: Henna, the natural plant-based dye can be used in its powder form as a hair colourant that will stain your hair in a vibrant shade for at least 4-6 weeks. It can be used by adding ½ cup henna with equal parts of water and letting it sit for 12 hours or so. Then apply coconut oil on your scalp so that henna won’t stain it and apply this mixture evenly on your head. Wrap in plastic and let it develop for two hours then wash as normal. • Lemon Juice: Having a slight acidic content, lemon juice can help strip off your hair from its pigment, thus, gently lightening it over time. It is best used to achieve sun-kissed highlights naturally. However, changes made to hair using lemon juice will be permanent. Anyway, to do this, pour lemon juice into a bottle and spray it over the sections of your hair you want to highlight. Then sit in the sun for some time for optimal results (at least an hour), and wash it out as usual.

Sometimes you just have to play a mad scientist and experiment with your looks. Whether it is cutting bangs in the middle of the night or choosing to change your hair color, whatever it is, life demands being a tad bit crazy at times. So not withstanding if it is through a box dye or lemon juice potion, do let us know how you decided to change your hair color at home.
