Your Guide to Pick the Right Foundation for Fair Skin
Foundation is the base of your makeup. Hence, it is very important to pick the correct shade of foundation that helps to build your makeup to perfection. The correct foundation will nourish, protect and moisturize your skin while giving you the most flawless base for makeup ever. It helps to hide fine lines, blemishes, pores, etc. So how do you know which foundation is the right one for you? Let’s find out based on the following factors.
The below classification will help you find your match. These are also names used in names of most products.
- Based on skin tone: The most basic types of skin tone that exist are fair skin, medium skin and dark skin. But did you know there are further classifications to these
- Porcelain: A porcelain skin tone is very fair and looks a little pale with almost no patches.
- Ivory/Warm Ivory: Ivory skin tone has a yellowish tinge to it. Warm ivory is, as the name suggests, a tad warmer than ivory.
- Sand: Sand skin tone is the last of the fair skin tones. It is warmest of the fair skin.
2. Based on undertone: After you have found out your perfect skin tone, determine what undertone you have. Hold out your inner wrist under natural lighting and determine what the colour of your veins is.
- Warm/Yellow: You have a warm undertone if your veins appear to be green in colour. Pick a foundation that has a yellow-golden base to it. These products would have words like warm, golden in their names.
- Cool/Pink: You would have cool undertone if your veins appear to be blue in colour. Pick a foundation that has a pink-blue base to it. These products will have words like ivory, cool in their name
- Neutral: If your veins appear to be a mix of both green and blue, you have a neutral undertone. Products for neutral undertone will have words like natural, classic and neutral in their names.
3) Based on skin type: The next step would be to select your skin type. This is relatively easy if you are using some skincare products.
- Oily/Combination: If your skin becomes greasy in a few hours post cleansing, you have an oily skin. Combination skin is when your T-zone becomes oily, while your cheeks remain dry. A mousse foundation is best for this skin type, as it is lightweight and airy. You can also select water based foundation.
- Normal: Normal skin is, well, normal. You are lucky as this skin is the most problem free skin type. You can get away with any type of foundation, but a liquid one would suit you more.
- Sensitive: If your skin becomes red and patchy easily, and get irritated too, you have sensitive skin. Powder foundation is best suited for sensitive skin, as it does not irritate your skin.
- Dry: If your skin feels stretchy after washing, you have a dry skin. A moisturizing foundation with a cream base is better for a dry skin.
4) Based on formulation: Foundations are available in different formulations too. Choose the one which works best for you.
- Liquid: Liquid foundations are a great option for a night time event, as they give more coverage and moisturize the skin. They also have a great staying power.
- Powder: Powder foundations are a better option for day time use and if you want a very sheer coverage. Also great if you do not the time on your hand to sit and lend liquid foundations!
- Mousse: Mousse, also known as whipped foundation, is liquid with air whipped in. It looks much like whipped cream in texture! It gives a perfect matte finish and feels weightless.
- Cake: Cake foundation is in a solid formal and is normally packed in round tins. The trick to apply it is to take a small amount and roll it between your fingers. Your body heat breaks it down, making it easier to apply. Now just dab it onto your face and blend well.
5)Based on coverage: Now, the fifth step is to select the type of coverage you will give.
- Light: A light coverage is ideal for daytime use when you do not to have too much of makeup on. BB or CC creams, tinted moisturizers are ideal for this. Dry and normal skin type can use this type.
- Medium: A medium coverage is a good idea for when you want to hide any imperfections for an even skin tone. This type of foundation is ideal for normal skin.
- Heavy: If you have a lot of redness, patches on your skin, with blemishes and pores seen, foundation that gives heavy coverage is ideal. Oily skin type should use heavy coverage, as it will not get washed out or fade with excess oil production.
6) Based on finish: The last step would be to pick the type of finish you desire for your makeup. Selecting the finish as pe r your skin type is also helpful.
- Natural: A natural finish foundation is ideal for a normal or sensitive skin type. These are usually oil-free formulas that look just like your normal skin.
- Matte: A matte finish is ideal for an oily or combination skin type. A matte finish foundation gives high coverage that stays in place all day long. These are usually whipped formulas that give a smooth finish with no shine or dewy look.
- Dewy: Dewy finish foundation for fair skin tone gives you a brilliant glow and a radiant shine, with a silky texture. These are most suited for dry skin, but even normal skin can get away with it.
