A beautiful bold red colour that looks amazing on your lips but stains your teeth and makes you look like you just had a paan! Made you go ewww right? Not anymore with these awesome methods to apply your perfect red lipstick!

How To Apply Red Lipstick Perfectly

Step 1: Exfoliate

Gently exfoliate your lips with a damp washcloth to get rid of any dry or chapped skin. A bold lip colour should have the perfect base to keep it from cracking. You can also use a lip scrub for exfoliation. For a homemade scrub, mix some sugar crystals and honey and gently rub on your lips.

Step 2: Clean

Thoroughly clean your lips after exfoliation. Just wet a soft cloth and wipe off any residue. If deemed necessary, just splash on some water and pat dry with a soft towel.

Step 3: Lip Balm

After exfoliation, apply your favourite lip balm to restore your lips moisture and hydrate them. Let the lip balm set in place for atleast 10 minutes for it to do its work. Now wipe off any excess with a tissue. Leave just enough for a balmy feeling.

Step 4: Lip Primer

Apply a lip primer all over your lips. Just like a primer for your regular makeup, a lip primer will help to keep your lip makeup from fading and will make it last longer.

Step 5: Lip Liner

Line your lips with a lip liner that is closest to the shade of your lip colour. If you do not have a matching lip liner, use a nude shaded one or a shade that is closest to the natural colour of your lips.

  • Start from the outer corners of your lower lip. Then using short strokes, work your way to the middle.
  • For the upper lip, start lining from the Cupid's bow and go outwards.
  • Fill in entirely with the liner.
  • If you have thin lips, line just outside your natural lip contours with the liner.
  •

This creates a base for the lipstick. It will also keep the colour in place and prevent it from feathering or bleeding. The colour will also last much longer. Also, a good lip liner will mask any discolouration or pigmentation of your lips. The lip colour will also be more truer to the shade it is in the tube.

Step 6: Lip Brush

Applying a bold colour using a lip brush as this will provide more control and deposit the colour more evenly. It also makes the colour last longer. A lip brush also enables you to reach the corners and coat the lips properly. After all, it all about less touch-ups and more fun, right?

  • Start from one corner of the lower lip and extend to the other corner.
  • Apply the colour using short strokes and in one direction.
  • For the upper lip, start from the middle and go outside.

If you do not have a lip brush, you can apply the colour from the tube directly as well. The base with the lip liner will help it stay in place.

Using Lip Brush

Step 7: Blot

If you have a creamy lipstick and want to wear it as matte, just blot off excess with a tissue. Take a tissue and lightly dab it in between your lips. It takes away any excess colour and leaves a matte finish. Then apply a second coat of the colour. It will make sure that your colour does not look too washed out and will keep the colour lasting longer.

Step 8: Conceal

After applying the colour, using a thin brush with taut bristles, apply concealer just outside of your lips. It will act like a barrier and prevent the colour from smudging. It will also make your skin look brighter and the edges sharper, making the colour pop.

Step 9: Gloss

If you want a more festive look, especially for a night out or an evening event, apply gloss on top. If you do not have a matching shade, use clear gloss. For a more dramatic look, you can also use the best lip gloss with golden shimmer. Gold and red create a royal look when paired together, and the overall look gives you a regal feeling. A sure shot way to amp up the heat!
