When it comes to makeup, people have different routines and aspects of what works of them and what does not. But now and then, we have all ended up with a smudged eyeliner, patchy foundation and eyeshadow colours that refuse to blend with one another. This has obviously caused a lot of bona fide stress and surpassed all frustration levels. So, if this is your case as well, using a makeup primer should definitely be your approach to good makeup. Makeup primers are gels or cream, that when applied over your skin, helps fill the large pores, tiny creases and bumpy textures, thereby providing an ideal surface for your makeup. So now, this begs the question: What is a primer used for?
What does a makeup primer do?
A makeup primer is a product, usually applied before layering your foundation and other makeup essentials to smooth the skin, making it look more polished and even. However, not only does a primer create a silky, smooth pore less canvas for your makeup, it also helps it stay on all day without fading, slipping or creasing. It basically helps the makeup to glide on smoothly, without any troubles or leaving behind any patches. Think of it like a seamless top gel layer to a smudged nail polish coating. Makeup primer uses its consistency to blur, hide and even out skin texture, so that when the makeup is applied on any rough or oily skin, it stays on for hours.
What does primer do for makeup?
Depending upon the skin type of an individual, primers can act in various ways to set the makeup and give an even-toned skin. Some have called it a double-sided tape or a spackle, due to its ability to even out the surface and prevent the foundation from creating tiny dots on your T-zone or to enhance the colour of an eyeshadow. Primers usually have a gel or cream like consistency, therefore, its vital to choose primers depending on your skin type. If you have dry skin, choose a water-based primer that is just like a lightweight moisturizer, to help your skin get a little hydrated. If you have oily skin type, use a silicone-based primer that has a soft, silky texture for your makeup to glide on without sinking into your pores or clogging them.
How to use a primer?

It’s pretty clear by now that one simply has to add a layer of primer to their faces before applying makeup. But should primers be applied with or without a moisturiser? Can primers act as sunscreen too? Over the years, these are some of the tips we have found helpful on how to use a makeup primer:
- Put it on a clean face: Primers work the best on clean, moisturized faces. Apply a moisturizer on your freshly washed face and wait for 5 mins before applying the primer. This will ensure that the hydration from the moisturizer is sealed on your face and makeup glides smoothly as well. Basically, a moisturizer or sunscreen should be the last step of your skincare routine and primers should be the first step of your makeup routine.
- Apply a thin layer: Primers can be creamy and usually are supposed to melt on your skin. So, if you apply too much of it, it can move around and slip the makeup instead of just holding it together smoothly. Take on a pea-sized blob of primer and that should be enough.
- Wait: Wait for a full 30 seconds to 1 minute, before you start applying your makeup. Give the primer some time to get absorbed by your skin and settle in. It will set the primer and your face, before you slather makeup over it.
Makeup primers are saviours if you have a textured, uneven or acne-prone skin. They can also be used as moisturizers for dry skin. Basically, the benefits of a primer are for everyone to take advantage of and is available at your disposal.
