Effective Home Remedies for Monsoon Hair Care

Sonal Trivedi

Monsoon can wreak havoc on your hair. According to studies, hair fall increases by  30% during the monsoon months due to the changes in the climatic conditions. The increased humidity in the atmosphere exacerbates hair woes, leading to issues, such as rampant hair fall, itchy scalp, dandruff and other fungal infections on the scalp.

Some common hair problems during monsoon are:

Hair fall: Excessive humidity combined with sweat can result in aggravating hair fall during the monsoon months. Hair tends to become brittle and is more prone to hair fall during the rainy season.

Dandruff and itchy scalp: Monsoons encourage the growth of malassezia, a type of fungus commonly associated with dandruff. It can also cause irritation and itchiness on the scalp.

Frizzy, dry hair: Humidity is the biggest reason for frizzy hair and one of the most common problems during monsoons. The moist air also leads to dryness of the locks, making them more prone to frizz and breakage.

Limp and lifeless hair: Those with naturally oily scalp face the problem of limp and lifeless hair during monsoon, as the extra moisture in the air attracts more dirt, making hair limp and lifeless.

Top 5 Home Remedies for Hair Fall

Hair care during monsoon can be a tedious task, with so many hair issues to deal with. Trying a few home remedies for hair fall during monsoon can not only help tackle the problem, but also help with maintaining the overall hair health during the rainy season.

  • Hair packs: Kitchen ingredients make for some of the best hair packs for the monsoon season. Some easy and quick combination hair packs to deal with monsoon hair problems are:
  1. Egg + Lemon + Honey: Mix 2 egg yolks, 1 egg white, lemon juice and some honey. Apply this paste on your hair, let it dry and wash off with a deep cleaning shampoo for an oil-free and clean scalp.
  2. Banana + Mayonnaise: A great combination to deal with frizzy hair during monsoon, this mask helps restore the much needed vitamins and makes hair supple. Mash one banana, add some mayonnaise and make a smooth paste. Apply on hair, leave it for 10 mins and wash it off with a mild shampoo.
  3. Vinegar + Honey: Mix equal quantities of vinegar and honey, apply this mask on your hair for 15 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo for straight and smooth hair.
  4. Fenugreek: Soak fenugreek seeds overnight and grind them into a paste. Apply this paste on the roots and leave it for 20 minutes and wash it off with a mild shampoo. Using this hair pack twice a month can drastically reduce hair fall during the monsoon months.

  • Oiling: Oiling is the key to having strong hair. With increased hair fall during the monsoon months, it is important to oil your hair twice a week to make sure that it gets the right dose of nourishment and strength. However, make sure that you do not keep your hair oiled overnight, as it can result in excessive sebum production, use a mild shampoo to wash it off. Kama Ayurveda Bringadi Intensive Hair Treatment Oil works well.
  • Avoid heat styling: Hair is extremely prone to breakage during monsoon, and using heat for styling can not only make hair dry but also accelerate breakage. Avoid using heat styling during the rainy season, and always make sure that you use a good heat protection spray in case you need to go in for styling. The Ktein 100% natural heat protection spray can not only save your hair from heat damage, but will also keep it away from harmful chemicals.
  • Natural shampoos: Skin on the scalp is extra sensitive during monsoons, and a natural homemade shampoo can be your best bet as a hair cleanser. Blend together 3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds soaked overnight along with a few mint leaves. Add 2 tablespoons of multani mitti (Fuller’s earth) along with the juice of half a lemon and mix well. Apply this natural hair cleanser for 1-2 hours (till it dries) and rinse it off with lukewarm water
  • Onion juice: Blend an onion and squeeze out the juice. Apply it to roots and scalp. Wash it off with a mild shampoo and follow it up with a conditioner. Onion juice works wonders for hair regrowth and helps tackle hair fall during monsoon.
