Makeup Tips & Tricks for Uneven & Textured Skin

Simran Sadarangani

Everyone has heard about uneven skin tones, because a lot of us suffer from dark circles & pigmentation! And thank the lord for correctors and concealers to save us from them. But hardly anyone has ever heard about an equally infuriating complement to that, which is uneven skin texture. This consists of bumps, flaky skin, pits and rough patches that are easy for the person to feel, but harder to see, until makeup is worn.

Perfect, flawless, and even skin is next to impossible if you have an uneven skin texture, although being close to it with the right techniques, methods and products is quite achievable. This article is a curation of some of the best tips to wearing makeup for uneven textured skin, to get as close to an even flat base as possible.

1.Skincare Time

Prepping your skin is one of the most important steps to achieving a flawless look. Skincare forms an even base to work on. A hydrating moisturiser to say bye bye to the dry skin, a good amount of under eye serum to keep the under eyes hydrated and lessen the puffiness, essential oil applied all over the face to add that glow factor, and of course, a misty lip balm to keep the lips hydrated in super important. Another factor to consider is the time all of this is applied and left to set in, so that the skin absorbs all of it, and is ready to be worked on. 15 minutes is a good enough time, and then it is “Prime time!” Yes, this means Primer is also a step that cannot be ignored in the process. A good layer of a good primer not only helps in providing for a smooth and silky canvas, but also helps to keep the concealer and foundation intact for a longer period of time.

2. Choosing the right concealer and foundation

Powder foundations are a big no no if you have uneven textured skin. The powder particles tend to settle into texture and make up appear much worse than it actually is. So we are now left with two options: dewy or matte foundation. If you are someone who has dry patches on your skin, then dewy foundation it is. Alternatively, if you have acne, or rashy skin, then matte foundation it is, in order to reduce the uneven texture.

3. Dampen your Sponge

A very common mistake that actually affects the makeup process in a drastic way, especially when you have uneven textured skin. Firstly, a dry blender will soak all the product in, hence you will be left with hardly any product on your face. Secondly, if your sponge is fully dry, and you use the same over dry skin, it will cause friction and make the dryness worse, and cause even more flakeyness. Hence, a damp sponge works better as it absorbs less of the product, which means more product on your face and also helps in smooth blending even if you have dry patches.

4. Start light

It is always best to start with light, one coat of concealer and foundation, rather than going over with layers and layers, in order to avoid the cakey look which tends to make the uneven texture look even more noticeable. Try to achieve the right balance so that your skin looks fresh and flawless, with small amounts of products, especially base products.

5. Follow a regular Skincare regime

Besides when you are wearing makeup, following a good skincare regime on a daily basis is very very important. Your skincare routine of course depends on your skin type. If you have very oily or very dry skin, a lot of pigmentation and rashes/acne, then you should definitely consult a dermatologist. But the general double cleanse, i.e. face wash for 40 seconds twice a day, Vitamin C serum, toner and moisturizer is necessary for everyone.

Makeup is not Botox. It can surely help cover the redness of rashes/acne, and pigmentation. But the bumps etc that are on someone’s face will still be slightly visible. Regular skincare is the most essential part to improve uneven textured skin along with great products to cover your blemishes!
