PARI With Purplle Embarks On A Journey Of Beauty & Justice

Empower women for a day and they’ll enrich your life for 24 hours.

Empower women every day, and they’ll enrich generations!

8th March. International Women's Day. The world celebrates us, speaks of our power, our love, and our strength to change the world. One day completely dedicated to us.

In the same world, there are women who do things a little differently. Serenading women, saluting their power, fighting for gross inequalities, and most importantly, raising their voice against Sexual and Domestic Violence - for them is an everyday battle.

One such chalk-horse is Ms. Yogita Bhayana - Founder of People Against Rapes in India.

Yogita moved away from her cushy airline job to help rape victims and usher them into a better life. She vowed to seek out justice, counselling and severe punishment for the accused. Thus, PARI (People Against Rapes in India) came into being. Apart from rape victims, Yogita also started working against crimes like domestic violence, marital rape, and child sexual abuse. Fiesty, driven and motivated by the inequalities of society, Yogita Bhayana has been fighting for children suffering from sexual violence for over a decade now.

We, at Purplle were honored when she sat down with us to talk about the grim reality , the challenges and told us how we are eons away from being completely free of this societal evil. At the end of the talk, we did realize that the day maybe dark now and the journey ahead tedious and challenging, however with organizations like PARI streams of hope and sunshine do light up the lives of sexual violence victims.

Purplle is proud to be sharing their celebrations with PARI on 8th March - International Women’s Day. This year, during the Purplle  Women’s Week from 5th Mar- 11th Mar, we have joined hands with Majlis and PARI (People Against Rapes in India) to contribute 5% of our total sales to rape and assault victims. Actress Yami Gautam has also joined us to champion this cause and raise funds with us.

Excerpts from our conversation with Ms. Yogita Bhayana:

Q1.

What is the most pressing challenge in India today pertaining to juvenile rape?

Ans1:

A victim is traumatized by the act. Most often, juvenile victims do not even hold the maturity to understand whether it was their fault or was it forcibly inflicted on them. This instills fear. A major factor why, rape cases go unaccounted in India.

Q2.

What are the normal day to day challenges that PARI faces?

Ans 2:

(Yogita takes a moment). Starting from the court cases to financial support, we face challenges at every turn. Financial aid for rape victims is hard to come by. Good lawyers are few and far fetched. Cases are piling everyday. (It was hard to pin-point one critical issue)

Q3:

Is there even one story of success that has stayed with you?

Ans 3:

It breaks my heart to say that till date I haven't encountered 100% success in any case. Even if the lower court does pass a hearing against the perpetrator. The fight seems unending at the higher courts. The only justice if you can call it one was the Nirbhaya Case. But unfortunately that too did not end in happiness.

Q4:

Is there a shift in thinking from the time PARI came to existence till now?

Ans 4:

Oh yes. Though very slow, people are beginning to realize that this is a problem that needs attention and aid. With the emancipation of women, and easy news access, organizations/ institutions and the country is waking up to the reality of juvenile rape and also to the realization that culprits must be penalized.

Q5:

How can a person help your organization?

Ans 5: Apart from financial aid, we are always searching for resources. We need writers, lawyers, designers, campaign managers, and social media support on a continuous basis. We do need volunteers to help us in all these areas.

Q6:

Your thoughts about the Women’s Day Initiative with Purplle and Yami Gautam.

Ans 6:

It’s absolutely brilliant that a beauty company like Purplle is associating itself with this cause. I am confident that as more women come to know of juvenile rape and its problems. The more we will look towards a brighter tomorrow

The evening ended with us knowing more about Pari and the scores of women it has helped over time. We also end the conversation with hope that one day, we truly celebrate women and their power and not just on 8th March but everyday. Pari, spearheaded by Yogita, gives us confidence that the horizon, though far now, isn't impossible to reach. Till then let’s join hands with Purplle , Pari and Yami Gautam and make this initiative a success.
