Tips for breastfeeding moms
Sneha Singh
Breastfeeding is natural. However, for many moms, breastfeeding can be challenging and painful in the beginning. But it doesn’t have to be that way. If you figure out how to address some of the challenges, then with patience and practice, it can become a rewarding experience.
Benefits of breastfeeding
Do you know that breastfeeding has benefits for both mom and baby? Breast milk is much better for the baby’s immune and digestive system than powdered artificial formula milk. They digest breast milk with ease when compared to formula milk.
It may lower the risk of breast and ovarian cancer, heart disease, and diabetes for moms. Breastfeeding hormones promote relaxation and increase attachment with the baby. Besides that, breastfeeding is cost-effective.
However, we understand breastfeeding challenges, so we have some breastfeeding tips for first-time and new moms.
Breastfeeding Tips For New Moms
1. Irregular milk production in the first week
Many moms have difficulty producing milk in the beginning and often feel disappointed. That’s why it’s essential to be aware of how your milk changes in the first week after birth.
From delivery to day three, you produce a small amount of colostrum. It’s the thick golden-colored first milk that is produced. However, when you keep nursing from day three to five, there is a patch of transitional milk. It is a mixture of colostrum and mature milk, and the quantity is more than the colostrum. Finally, from day five to seven, you will produce a larger volume of mature milk, a thinner and lighter shade of yellow-orange.
The cycle of producing milk relies heavily on how much milk your baby has sucked from your breasts. The more milk your baby sucks, the more you produce. So, keep nursing. The more your baby feeds, the whiter your milk production will be.
2. Breastfeeding positions
There are several positions to choose from, and finding the right one is the foremost among tips for breastfeeding moms. You could try a cradle, which is excellent for newborns and gives more support and control of the baby’s neck and head.
If you are breastfeeding twins or triplets, you can go for a football position, wherein both the babies rest on your thighs and position diagonally around your breasts. It is suitable for moms with multiples or a C-section birth.
You could also try a lean back position, which is good for getting the baby to open wider, or a straddle position which is great for older babies. Another good position to try is a sideline position, which allows moms to rest while feeding the baby. It’s a good position for babies with better head and neck control.
3. Effective Latching
Like choosing a comfortable breastfeeding posture, it’s also essential to ensure that the baby is latching on correctly. An ineffective and shallow latch can cause the nipples to be sore and make feeding painful. On the other hand, an effective and firm latch ensures that the baby is sucking properly and you’re comfortable without nipple pain.
4. Breast inflammation
As you produce more of the mature milk, your breasts will become fuller and heavier. It is perfectly normal and can be managed by feeding your baby, often using both breasts. To get rid of the pain and swollen parts, you can also pump after nursing, or you can hand express if your breast still feels full.
5. Breast engorgement
Besides being painful to you, engorgement also prevents your baby from latching on effectively. It usually happens when you don’t pump or nurse often. To prevent engorgement, you should nurse frequently and wear a supportive bra all the time. If the baby can’t latch on, you should hand express or pump the milk to reduce swelling. You could also apply a warm compress or take a warm shower and massage your breasts to release the milk. After feeding, apply a cold compress to the breast to relieve swelling.
6. Blocked ducts and mastitis
If your milk is not flowing freely, your milk duct may be temporarily blocked, which can result in a painful breast infection, known as mastitis. If you have blocked ducts or mastitis, you should nurse often or pump from both depressed and expressed parts of the lump to express the remaining milk after feeding. It is also recommended to rest as much as possible. Drink plenty of water, apply moist heat or gently massage the breast to encourage milk to let down.
7. Milk supply
Usually, milk supplies are established in the first three weeks, so be patient and breastfeed. Pump frequently or hand express every two to three hours initially. In the first few hours of delivery, it is crucial to breastfeed. Skin-to-skin contact with the infant has shown positive effects in improving milk supply.
Remember, the more milk your baby drinks from you, the more milk you produce. So do include skin-to-skin breastfeeding in your breastfeeding routine. Another way to improve milk supply is to either hand express or pump for five to 10 minutes immediately after each nursing session. This will trick your body into believing that you are still nursing, and your supply will increase. Drink plenty of water and juicy fluids, lots of water.
Stay hydrated and eat healthily.
8. Right Feeding Frequency
Newborns usually feed about 8 to 12 times in 24 hours, including nights. As the baby grows, its feeding frequency changes. An important breastfeeding tip for new mothers is to look for their feeding cues and not the clock. Some of the feeding cues to look out for are when the baby opens its mouth. That is, trying to look or find your breast or nipples, stretching, taking hands to their mouth, and eventually crying. So, do not time your nursing sessions. Follow the baby’s lead. Here are 5 breastfeeding benefits for mom and baby.
9. Breastfeeding Essentials for a comfortable breastfeeding
You would need a good pair of disposable nursing pads. Breast pads help you soak off the excess milk when let down begins and your breasts leak. Breastfeeding accessories to keep handy include diapers, a nursing pillow, and helpful creams when your breasts ache or swell.
These make for essential breastfeeding tips for new moms. Here’s wishing you great motherhood!
