Check How Stress Causes Skin Problems

Sneha Singh

Stress is the natural defense mechanism of our body against danger and predators. It allows the body to secrete hormones and become ready to confront or evade danger.

When it becomes chronic, stress can have severe effects on your health. Apart from causing several health issues, stress can leave its marks on your face as well, in the form of wrinkles, dry skin and acne.

Before discussing further, let us first look at the causes of stress.

Causes of Stress

The range of situations that lead to stress is known as stressors. Any event or activity that puts heavy demands on you can turn out to be quite stressful. Stress can also be self-generated.

Some external and internal causes that result in stress include:

  • Significant changes in life
  • Difficulties in relationship
  • Negative thinking
  • Seeking perfection

Effects of Stress on Your Skin

When you are under stress, it results in a chemical reaction in your body that makes the skin sensitive and reactive. It can even make it harder for your skin problems to heal.

Let us now briefly discuss some of the effects that stress can have on your skin:

1. Acne:

A body under stress produces a large amount of a hormone known as Cortisol. It allows the hypothalamus to produce a hormone, CRH.

CRH stimulates the sebaceous glands to release oil close to your hair follicles. When these glands produce excess oil, they can clog pores and result in acne.

Now, this acne caused by stress can lead to further problems like pimples, blackheads or whiteheads.

2. Pimples:

There are different stages of acne. In each of those stages, various symptoms appear and become intense. Pimples are one of those symptoms of acne.

Stress causes pimples that occur due to the ruptures in clogged pores. They present themselves as inflamed, pus-filled lesions, colors ranging from pink to slightly red.

3. Dry Skin:

The outer layer of our skin is known as the stratum corneum. It contains lipids and proteins that help hydrate your skin cells.

The stratum corneum also acts as a barrier to protect one's skin underneath. When it does not work in the desired manner, your skin becomes dry and itchy.

Stress can slow down the stratum corneum's ability to retain water and heal itself.

4. Rashes

Stress can weaken your immune system and creates an imbalance of bacteria in your skin known as dysbiosis.

When this imbalance takes place on your skin, it results in rash or redness. Stress causes rashes or other skin inflammation concerns like eczema, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis.

5. Wrinkles

Stress can alter the protein content in your skin and lowers the level of elasticity. This loss of elasticity contributes to the formation of wrinkles.

Wrinkles caused by stress make the skin lose its strength and flexibility. It happens due to the breakdown of the skin’s connective tissue.

6. Hair Loss and Graying Hair

If you are under stress, it can also lead to hair loss. Cells known as melanocytes produce melanin, a pigment that gives color to your hair.

Stress can instigate sympathetic nervous activity, which causes the stem cells that create melanocytes to go away. When these cells disappear, new cells lose their color and turn gray.

7. Swelling Under Your Eyes

Insufficient sleep that causes stress can increase the signs of aging, including uneven pigmentation, reduced elasticity and fine lines.

A lack of skin elasticity can also contribute to the formation of puffiness or swelling under your eyelids.

8. Eczema

Stress results in an increase in cortisol, the stress hormone. When your body starts producing a high amount of cortisol due to stress, the skin can get abnormally oily. It triggers an outbreak of eczema.

How to cope with stress

There are some unavoidable causes of stress. They include unexpected job loss or sudden death in the family. However, finding different ways to cope with stress and cutting down on avoidable stress can help you manage it better.

  • Take time out for those activities that help you relax and reduce your stress level considerably.
  • Maintain a healthy diet and get sufficient sleep to allow your body to manage stress better.
  •  Do exercises as they can lower the stress hormones and give you enough time to distract your mind from the cause of your stress.
  • Discussing your problems with a family member, friend or mental health expert can help you deal with stress. If skin damaging is worrying you, follow these steps.
