6 Reasons Why You Shouldn't Skip On Primer

Ashwini Ijantkar

Imagine makeup on an oily face, or large pores peeping through your skin after applying makeup, or worst case scenario you wake up with a face full of acne and blemishes after applying makeup the previous day. Quelle Horreur! These are some harsh consequences of not applying a primer before applying foundation and the rest of your makeup. A primer does much more than just blurring your imperfections and here’s why you shouldn't ever skip using a primer.

Benefits Of A Primer:

Preps Skin Like A Pro:

The foremost purpose of a primer is to prep your skin for the base makeup. A primer typically blurs all bumps and uneven skin texture to create a smooth canvas for other makeup products to glide smoothly on your skin.

Controls Excess Oil:

Greasy makeup can be fixed with a simple step called primer. Primer locks your pores that secrete oils from your skin and keeps your skin shine free.

Fills Out Pores:

A primer flattens out your pores and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, acting like a filter for your skin.

Hides Imperfections:

Pesky dark scars, weird bumps and redness can all be masked with a primer. Many primers in the makeup world are tinted to color correct any imperfections on your skin.

Long Lasting Makeup:

Face masks and extreme humidity won’t budge your makeup if you have primer on. Primer makes your makeup stick on to your skin so that your makeup lasts longer. If you apply a primer, you don’t have to worry about runny makeup.

Acts As A Barrier:

Irritated skin filled with acne after a day of applying makeup is a girl’s worst nightmare. Worry not! Cause a primer acts as a protective barrier between your skin and the harmful chemicals that your makeup consists of.

It Prevents Oxidation:

Oxidation causes your foundation to darken or turn orange after applying it on your skin. A primer fights off oxidation, so that your foundation doesn’t get dull with time.

How To Use Primer As A Base:

  • First off, prep your skin with your skincare routine. A skincare routine typically consists of a CTM routine i.e. Cleansing, Toning and Moisturizing.
  • If you feel extra, put on some serum for a well moisturized skin.
  • Check if your primer is silicone or water-based. If your foundation is silicone based then your primer has to be silicone based and vice versa. Silicone based primers are best for oily skin, while water-based primers are suitable for dry skin types.
  • Apply your primer gently using your fingertips and starting from the center of your face you massage it outwards. (You can also use a brush for this step)
  • Wait for a minute or two, for it to settle onto your skin.
  • Then lay on the rest of your makeup products as usual. It is best to begin with a color corrector (if you use one) and foundation there after.
