Chaas or buttermilk is a well-known drink for summers in India and as tasty as it is, it doesn’t get enough credit for being a solution to so many common skin problems. So this common cooling beverage which is the outcome of the separation of butter from milk provides the body with a lot of nutrition while being lower in calories. It is not only good for you from within but its topical application also offers the skin with healing properties. Considering all this, we compiled a list of the benefits of buttermilk for your skin

 Buttermilk Benefits For Skin

Buttermilk is highly beneficial for the skin, especially when combined with other naturally occurring ingredients beneficial to our skin like rosewater, honey, aloe vera gel. So here are some ways you can get the most out of buttermilk by using it on your skin:

To Naturally Cleanse The Skin:

  • Buttermilk has the ability to cleanse the impurities on the surface or in the pores. It can also remove dead skin cells and control bacterial growth. It also has astringent properties thanks to the lactic acid that helps in cleansing the skin while imparting it with a natural glow.
  • To make a cleanser with buttermilk at home, you will need 3 tbsp of buttermilk, 1 tbsp of olive oil, 1 teaspoon almond oil, 2-3 drops of rosewater.
  •  Mix the ingredients together properly and apply it on your skin.
  • Leave it on for 15-20 minutes and wash the face with water while using circular motions to massage the mixture away from your skin.

To Reduce Suntan:
Buttermilk is a dairy product which makes it rich in lactic acid and milk proteins. As a result it can loosen the impurities and dead skin cells from the face. Lactic acid helps to exfoliate the upper damaged layer of the skin, prompt skin cell turnover and reveal a new, healthy, even-toned skin.

  • To make this exfoliator, you will need 4 tbsp of buttermilk, 1 tbsp of rosewater, 1 tbsp of organic honey, 1 tbsp of aloevera gel.
  • Mix these ingredients well together and blend them into a smooth fine paste.
  • Apply the paste to your face and neck for a few minutes and then massage it.
  • Rinse with water after 15-20 minutes.

To Exfoliate The Skin:

Lactic acid in buttermilk essentially contains good bacteria that makes it a mild and gentle exfoliator. This lactic acid in buttermilk is what is classified in skincare as an AHA or alpha hydroxy acid which is known for its exfoliating properties and imparting the skin an even toned look.

  • To make this, take 1/4th cup of buttermilk, ½ cup tomato juice, 1 tbsp almond powder and 1 tbsp sandalwood powder.
  • Combine the ingredients well into the buttermilk until it forms a thick paste.
  • Apply the paste over your face and neck and rub it along in circular motions to give it an exfoliating effect.
  • After 10 minutes of application, rinse it with water.

To Get Even Toned Skin:

Buttermilk contains astringent properties that can help lighten dark spots. The lactic acid takes care of impurities whereas the milk proteins ensures a smooth everlasting glow. Therefore, one can use buttermilk to also minimise the appearance of ores and for a firmer looking skin.

  • To make this use 2 tbsp of buttermilk with ½ tbsp of oatmeal.
  • Mix it well and apply on your skin then rinse when it has dried off.
  • Buttermilk combined with oatmeal can cleanse and detoxify your skin, preventing discoloration and promoting skin lightening and tightening.

To Achieve Glowing Skin:

Buttermilk like most dairy products is also known to be an excellent moisturiser which helps to nourish the skin from deep within. It is also known to make acne scars less visible thereby giving our skin a radiant glow.

  • One can use buttermilk to achieve a glowing skin by combining 3 tbsp of buttermilk, 2 tbsp of gram flour, 1 tbsp of cucumber juice and 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder.
  • Make sure you don't add more than a little pinch of turmeric powder and then apply this paste on your face.
  • Rinse it after 15 minutes or when it dries down using lukewarm water.

To Prevent Premature Aging:

The antioxidants present in buttermilk help protect your skin against free radical damage. Additionally, it also nourishes your skin and promotes skin cell turnover so you always look youthful as ever. One of the main benefits of drinking buttermilk for skin is that it helps to flush out toxins and gives your skin time to heal and repair its cells.

  • To make a mask that will prevent premature aging, just mix 2 tbsp of buttermilk, 1 mashed banana and 1 tbsp raw organic honey in a bowl.
  • Blend this mixture using a blender or a mixer grinder and apply the paste on your face.
  • Allow the mixture to dry completely before washing it with water.

These are the ways you can use buttermilk for skin benefits. It is a common drink found or made at most Indian households, therefore, using this to ensure your skin is cured of a variety of problems sounds like the best DIY project to us. Now that you know about it too, make sure you try it out and enjoy the umpteenth benefits of this cool summer drink.
