Get The Most Out Of Your Shower Session By Trying Deep Conditioning
Aayushi Mehra
We all have quoted “Messy Hair, Don’t Care” at some point in our lives but internally we know the struggle is real and having bad hair days can be quite depressing at times. Hair problems are ubiquitous courtesy heat styling, pollution, chemicals and sun exposure. But, is there a solution to this pressing problem? Of course, there is. For when things get overwhelming between you and your hair and when good hair days seem like a far fetched dream, the only thing you should be doing is - Deep Conditioning.
What is Deep Conditioning?
Deep conditioning is the process of applying a thick and restorative formula to your hair, using steam or moist heat to encourage the penetration of the formula into the deeper layers of your scalp. The said formula has nourishing ingredients that help restore your hair’s moisture, strengthen it and reduce the damage caused by heat styling and other chemicals. It’s like an elixir for people with damaged hair and for those who want extra nourishment for their hair to fight environmental or chemical damage.
What Are The Benefits Of Deep Conditioning?
Deep conditioning tailors specific products to cater to your hair’s need and ensure that you regain your once lustrous, voluminous tresses back sooner than later. Check out some more compelling reasons why you must try deep conditioning:
1.Helps Hair Retain The Moisture:
Deep conditioning products contain humectants that help draw the moisture to your hair shaft and root, thus improving their hydration quotient. This means hair remain healthy, hydrated and shiny.
2.Improves Hair Elasticity:
Now that your hair isn’t as damaged as before, it won’t break easily. Deep conditioning adds to the moisture content of your hair, boosting its elasticity. The essential ingredients in deep conditioning are meant to hydrate and nourish the damaged hair, and prevent hair breakage from chemicals or styling products.
3.Improves Shine:
The nourishment from deep conditioning also helps hair regain its original shine. Hair usually loses its shine due to over styling, harsh chemical-based shampoos or due to the damaging effect of the sun. The deep conditioning treatment will restore your lost shine by upping the hydration of the shafts making them look more soft and shiny.
How To Do Deep Conditioning?
Deep conditioning varies as per different hair types. So, step one would be choosing a deep conditioning product that addresses the needs of your hair. Based on whether you have done heat styling or the texture of your hair, these products will determine how you should deep condition your. For example, if you have textured hair, you need a heavier conditioner; if you have fine and straight hair, you can use a light one, so on and so forth. So the main question now is-how to do deep conditioning at home? Predominantly, there are two ways.
1.In The Shower:
Deep conditioners need to be left on for 5-30 minutes depending on your product and hair type. If you want to apply it for a shorter period of time, apply it in the shower before you bathe. Allow the conditioner to sit in your hair and let the steam from your shower play its role in making the product more effective as they penetrate into the deeper layers of the scalp.
2. Use A Plastic Cap:
For a salon-like experience, you can apply the conditioner on your hair, cover it with a plastic cap and then sit under a heated lamp or dryer to ensure the product penetrates into your scalp. This will help certain ingredients infuse the hair cuticle preventing breakage and damage.
How Often Should You Deep Condition Your Hair?
Everyone has different hair types and different hair care needs depending on the damage. But, generally speaking, if you have fine and straight hair, using a deep conditioner one or twice a month should do the trick. Over conditioning can weigh down the hair and make it flat, getting more greasy easily and unmanageable. But if you have textured and dry hair, using these conditioners once a week is recommended. Our pro-tip is to start by using it once a week and reduce the frequency as per your hair care needs or simply talk to your hairstylist.
Make sure that you apply the conditioner from the lengths towards the root and apply it on clean hair, which means shampoo first. Rinse it off with cold water to close the hair cuticle to ensure all the infused oils stay locked in to do their job. You can also leave it overnight when your hair needs extra love. Deep conditioning has helped many people regain their hair strength, moisture and volume and we hope it does the same for you. Here’s to more happy hair days!
