You Don’t Need SPF During Winters: Myth or Fact?
Megan Alphonso
Biggest Myth Busted!
The truth is you need sunscreen EVEN in winters.
Because let’s do the logic. UV Rays aren't going to tuck themselves to sleep under the blanket of clouds? They will wiggle their way out only to wreak havoc on your skin.
Considering that the sun works in mysterious ways, we want to make one thing clear: YOU NEED SPF ALL DAY, EVERY DAY- EVEN ON A COLD WINTER'S DAY.
But before we set the record straight, here's a quick crash course on UVA and UVB rays.
What is UVA & UVB?

UVA: Ultraviolet A rays, also known as "long wave" rays, make up 95 per cent of the rays. They tan your skin. They even penetrate the skin much deeper than UVB Rays and cause ageing, wrinkles, dark spots and even skin cancer.
UVB: Ultraviolet B rays, also known as "shortwave" rays, don't penetrate the skin as deeply. These cause redness and sunburns and are most intense during the summer or the sunniest hours of the day.
Myth & Fact About Sunscreen
Myth: You don't need to put on sunscreen in winter!
UVB rays are indeed lessened by the clouds during winter, but the UVA rays?? Nada! They are very much present during these cold grey days and will penetrate through clouds and glass windows.
Fact: Makeup has enough SPF; you don't need a separate sunscreen
It comes down to the way the product is applied. "Take foundation, for example: to achieve the level of SPF mentioned on the bottle, you would need to apply so much product that your makeup would look odd and extra cakey. It's much better to use a separate SPF giving you the flexibility of makeup coverage you need.
Myth: You don't need to reapply sunscreen throughout the day
Not all SPFs are water-resistant, and most become less effective if they become wet. So if you sweat too much or are on the go, you must reapply sunscreen every 2-3 hours.
Wait, Wait! What is SPF in sunscreen?

SPF in sunscreen stands for Sun Protection Factor. What does it measure? It determines the level of UVB or UVA protection it offers.
- SPF 30 sunscreen blocks approximately 97% of UVB radiation
- SPF 50 sunscreen keeps out nearly 98% of UVB radiation
