Know How to Style Your Look On Rakhi 2021
Debalina Mukherjee
Rakhi is all about spreading love and care. The age-old tradition celebrates the occasion by sisters tying a thread (rakhi) on their brothers’ wrists. The brothers shower sisters with gifts in return. But as years have passed, we have seen modern changes to the festival where it doesn’t follow any gender boundaries. Both the sibling's tie threads on each others’ wrists and promise to protect one another.
We at Purplle, also believe in celebrating gender-neutral rakhi and we are ready to give you all the reasons to pick your favourite makeup products to get ready on Rakshabandhan. Here’s how 5 of our Purplle writers have been celebrating their rakhi with their siblings as they jot down their special makeup picks for the day.

Rakhi And Dinner Date

“Why should I be tying Rakhi, when I protect you both, every time you fall in trouble?” I chirp to my lil’ (not so little, but I’d like to believe so) brothers, every year. This banter-cum-bullying goes on & on till I don’t find a lucrative gift to settle with. Welcome to my yearly family Rakhi shenanigans!! This year we are at home, because of Covid, & we are looking forward to having fun, food, and a jovial time together till we sail apart for god knows how many years.
Starting with my Rakhi special look, I chose a red Chikankari suit with oxidised metal earrings to pair with. After the apparel get-together sesh, I turn-over to my fave job - Beauty touch up! As the red was a little vibrant, I chose subtle shades for the contrast. Hitting a home run with a flawless base, I follow it with an eye-luring charm. Golden eyeshadow + classy winged eyeliner + intense stroke of my fave kohl, & et voila, it’s done! A light dab of rosy blush for a natural radiant pop blended to perfection. Last but not least - powering up my pout game!
#QuickTip: Before the makeup sesh, exfoliate your lips with a lip scrub for a smooth texture and even finish.
Outline your cupid’s bow in a cross and the inner corner of your lips with a dark lip liner. Fill in your fave lipstick inside the canvas. And ladies, it's a wrap! Head to your fave restaurant, have your sibling time together, and yesss, don’t miss carrying your mask and sanitizer. Happy Rakhi!

My Rakhi Is Always Gonna Be Sisters Before Misters!

Some bonds and relationships don’t need a stamp of ceremony or a sacred thread. That’s the kind of bond I share with my Didi. All through life, she’s been my companion, guide, cheerleader and protector!
Remember these lyrics from a popular Hindi song about Rakhi? “Bhaiya, mere Rakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana.” This song always held a different meaning for me. In my head, it’s always, “Didi, mere Rakhi ke bandhan ko nibhaana.”
Tbh, she’s more than any brother could ever mean to me, so celebrating any special occasion with her is fun and meaningful. That includes Rakshabandhan!
‘Dolling up’ is the high point of any celebration for us. That’s just one of the fun things we love to do together. The Chakrawarti sisters like to keep it simple (and tasteful) though. For Rakhi, we’ll be picking out a pretty kurta, the kind that is summery and comfortable. And for makeup, I’m pretty sure we’ll be going for a ‘natural’ look. A subtle cat-eye, melt-in-the-skin foundation, some Kohl, and a cute shade of lipstick, is really all we need to put on our sparkling sister act.
Listing our festive makeup faves here, just in case you’d like to try these too. Have a safe and happy Rakhi!

Celebrating Sisterhood

Well, my first tryst with makeup was all thanks to my elder sister who decided to plop over a full box of powder for ‘The Angel Look’ and bullied me to pose for the camera.
While I am relieved those experimental makeup look days are well behind us, the memories sure make us chuckle to this day. Same but different, the ying to my yang, it’s fun to have a best friend fixed for life. While Rakshabandhan might be all about ‘the bros’, I believe it is a great chance to dress up, wear fun makeup and relive crazy times with your sisters as well.
Knowing us, we are sure to kickstart our Rakhi look with a mask party for the oh-so-lovely glow. As our celebrations are unique - for our makeup look, we are sure to rock our favourite combo of funky coloured eyeliner and nude lips. Skipping the conventional Rakhi ritual, our task is to paint on some matching talons and pose away for the gram. So, ladies IMO take this day as a fun excuse to make memories with your siblings or even girlfriends who are no less than sisters!
Here are some of our Raksha Bandhan special picks you can use too, this Rakhi!

Long-Distance Rakhi!

With Covid going on, I’ll be face timing my brother who is in Australia at the moment! Our Rakhi rituals used to basically be him pampering me with my latest demands and me happily accepting them! Yes, I’ve been a spoiled little sister for most of my life (not complaining!). This year is special and also slightly different because we haven't seen each other in ages! We have planned to do it virtually as has become the norm.
I’ve planned a dewy and fresh look for the D-day. I usually also like to keep my makeup minimal, bright and glossy! I am planning to have a neutral and hydrated base using a foundation and a dash of (mandatory) concealer under my eyes! I’d like to double up on that mascara to accentuate my not-so-long lashes. Use minimal eyeliner to outline my eyes but add a hint of highlighter to the inside edges! I’ll highlight my cheeks with some peach blush and finish off the look with some lip balm!
Here’s hoping our virtual Rakhi will be as vibrant and fresh as my makeup looks!
Here are my top product picks:
LA Girl Pro Coverage HD Foundation
Maybelline New York Instant Age Rewind
Lakme Absolute Shine Liquid Eyeliner
Maybelline New York Fit Me Blush

Who Needs A Brother To Celebrate Rakhi?

Let’s rewind the clock and go back to the time when my elder sister literally bullied my parents into having me. Coz and I quote “she felt super bored as an only child on Rakhi.” Well, to her surprise, she was NOT blessed with a brother. But she protected me like a lil’ bro from day one! And I also played out my woes as a younger brother. Whenever someone would ask us about a ‘bhai’ on Raksha Bandhan, we'd name each other. And that’s how the tradition of Rakhi started in our house. From yelling and hitting during the day to stuffing sweets into each other’s mouths by the evening, I always made sure she was able to see her little brother in me that she wished for! Today, years later and miles apart, she still sends me a Rakhi on Raksha Bandhan every year! And I, well, let’s just say I try making up for it at the last moment!
However, this year there’s a twist! I’ve got a complete Rakhi Look planned already! I know my sister is gonna look like her boring, elder sibling self as always, but I’m ready with a stunning look to balance it out! Here’s everything I have in my Rakhi Makeup Pouch!
Faces Canada Weightless Matte Foundation
Maybelline New York Fit Me Matte+Poreless Pressed Powder
Lakme 9 To 5 Pure Rouge Blusher
Stay Quirky BadAss Kajal - Black
Maybelline New York Face Studio Master Strobing Cream
Sugar Cosmetics Mettle Liquid Lipstick - Mimosa
So that’s how our Purplle squad is celebrating Rakshabandhan this year with their near and dear ones. Now that we know that you don’t need a brother to celebrate the special day, use this occasion to show love to your siblings and demand for all the wishes. For the ones who don’t have an elder or younger sibling, you can very well protect yourself from the evils. Do yourself a favour, pick the best cosmetics from Purplle and gift yourself! Have a Happy and Safe Raksha Bandhan!
