What is dry skin?

Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition characterized by scaling, itching, and cracking. Some people have naturally dry skin while some find their skin dry because of a variety of reasons such as winter, using the wrong products on their face, etc.

Dry skin and sunlight
Although most people love going out in the sun, too much exposure to harsh sunlight can significantly damage your skin. The sun’s heat dries out your skin and depletes the skin’s supply of natural lubricating oils. Also, too much exposure to UVA and UVB rays can cause burning and long-term changes in the structure of your skin. Read about the best sunscreens & lotions for all skin types here!

If your skin has been exposed to the sun for long periods, it may result in one or all of the following:

1)     Dry skin: Even in young adults, skin that has been exposed to the sun for long periods gradually loses its moisture and essential oils, resulting in skin that is dry, flaky, and prematurely wrinkled.

2)     Sunburn: This is the common name for a skin condition and injury that appears immediately following the skin's exposure to UV radiation. Mild sunburn causes painful reddening of the skin, whereas severe sunburn causes tiny vesicles and large blisters on your skin.

3)     Actinic keratosis: This is a bump on your skin that feels like sandpaper. It can also be a small, scaly patch of skin with a pink, red, yellow, or brown tint. Unlike sunburn, an actinic keratosis does not go away unless it is removed by a doctor. This develops in those areas of your skin that have been repeatedly exposed to the sun's UV rays. It may also result in an increased risk of skin cancer.

4)     Long-term changes in the skin’s collagen: Your skin will undergo photoaging, or premature aging because of sun exposure. You can also suffer from actinic purpura, which is bleeding from fragile blood vessels underneath the skin. In photoaging, your skin develops wrinkles and fine lines. This occurs due to changes in the collagen of a skin layer called the dermis. In actinic purpura, UV rays damage the structural collagen that supports the skin's tiny blood vessels. This is more likely to occur in older people.

Ways to protect your dry skin from too much sun exposure

  • Do apply a sunsceen with an SPF of 30 or above and with a broad spectrum of protection against both UVA and UVB rays. You should continuously reapply to avoid sweating off or washing off of the sunscreen.
  • Make sure your lips are protected by using sunblock on your lips. You should choose a product that has been specially formulated for the lips, having a sun protection factor of 20 or more.
  • Do not venture outdoors if the sun is at its peak, from about 10 AM to 3 PM.
  • Wear sunglasses with UV light protection.
  • Protect your skin by wearing long pants, a shirt with long sleeves, and a hat with a wide brim.
  • Some medicines and skin care products can increase your risk of UV damage to your skin. If you are taking prescription medicines and you spend a great deal of time outdoors, do consult your healthcare professions and ask whether you need to take any special precautions to avoid sun exposure.
