How Do I Clean My Makeup Brushes?

Rebekah Patnigere

Makeup brushes are the foundation of our cosmetic collection!  They help us blend, contour and cut-crease so that we have the most flawless face forward! However, more often than not, we tend to over-focus on achieving the most flawless finish while ignoring the makeup brushes themselves! We’ve all been guilty of using dirty or overused makeup brushes at some point in life! So here's a little guide to assist you with just that!

Why do I need to clean my makeup brushes?

If this was the first question in your mind, then get ready for some major ewwww! facts:

<Warning: the last one is the worst!>

  • Dirty brushes spread bacteria causing the most dreaded: BREAKOUTS!
  • According to experts, makeup tools carry a truckload of pollution & dead skin cells that could increase the chance of staph infection. What's a staph infection that you may ask? A whole lot of swelling and painful blisters….yikes!
  • Your sensitive pupils don’t have a respite from soiled brushes either. The chances of a pink eye AKA conjunctivitis also increase!
  • The main use of a makeup brush is to give a smooth airbrushed look to your skin. But when makeup brushes are dirty it defeats the main purpose! On top of that a persistent itch will drive you crazy!
  • And the worst of all, dirty makeup brushes attract bugs! Now you most certainly don’t want that right?!?

I hope the above reasons were convincing enough to get you cleaning your brushes! Now let’s dive right in…(into shampoo water!)

CLEANSING WITH SHAMPOO

Just like we don’t use bar soaps on our hair, simply because they’re way too harsh, you must abstain from cleaning your makeup brushes with them too! And just before you think that dishwashing liquid gels will do the trick, think again! They’re wayyyyyyy worse!

What about a pricey brush cleaning solution? In my opinion, NOT NEEDED.

A good ol’ shampoo does the trick! Let me explain- When you wash your hair, the shampoo cleanses gently leaving hair squeaky clean without stripping the natural oils. Similarly, when you use shampoo to clean your makeup brushes they effectively remove the dirt, oil, and grime while keeping the hair bristles soft and smooth.

BUT HOW DO YOU CLEAN MAKEUP BRUSHES?

It’s actually much simpler than you think! Follow these easy-peasy steps and you’ll be good to go!

  • Soak your brushes in lukewarm water.
  • Use a drop of your shampoo of choice and gently rub the bristle tips…
  • Rinse out the dirt under running water.
  • Repeat the step, for squeaky clean results.
  • Re-shape the brush head to its original form.
  • Hang the brushes upside down to dry!

Expert Tip: Never dry your brush on a towel since the bristles might develop mold.

AND…HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEAN MY BRUSHES?

Cleaning your brushes once a week is the most appropriate! Cleaning makeup brushes once a month may cause over-clogging of the gross makeup residue, dirt, and oil. On the other hand, cleaning them every day may spoil the texture of the bristles and may also affect the way your brushes carry the product and blend it.

WHEN SHOULD I THROW MY BRUSHES AWAY?

Do Makeup brushes have an expiration date? Well, yes of course they do! Nothing lasts forever, honey. There’s a time to toss those makeup brushes in the bin! Here’s when you have to:

  • When they’ve lost shape. The shape of the brush head plays an important role in determining the way it blends products. Sharp edges give precision, rounded brushes for blending, so on and so forth. Lil’ mishaps may happen, but too much of it means you have to bid adieu to the brush!
  • When bristles fall out. This is a no-brainer. You don’t want fine hair getting stuck onto your face while applying makeup right? Synthetic brushes don’t shed fast, but natural bristles ones do! To prevent shedding, avoid rigorous blending and washing. Yes, it takes more time than usual but gives long life to the brushes.
  • When product application is uneven. Sometimes it’s hard to figure whether the brush is applying the product correctly or not. But incorrect deposition leads to a patchy finish.

If you’ve got to throw your brushes, how about some brand new ones?
