How to Use a Highlighter
Aayushi Mehra
From serious shimmer to subtle radiance, light-reflecting cosmetic products are in trend, thanks to their potential of brightening up dull complexions, enhancing natural features and giving the skin a healthy shine.
It’s the highlighter that works wonders. But the problem is that highlighters can be confusing for us, especially when we do not know how to use highlighters. How a highlighter is different from a blush, where to apply a highlighter, and what it is applied with - there are a plethora of questions to seek answers to.
But before anything else, let’s understand what a highlighter is.
A highlighter is a light-reflecting product available in powder, cream and liquid forms. It enhances complexion and offers the skin a dewy and brighter glow while making the cheekbones appear more prominent. It also reawakens ageing or dull skin and accentuates facial features naturally and subtly.
How to Use a Highlighter
So, how can we use a highlighter as part of our makeup? We can apply it only to a few areas on the face. A few dabs can make the entire face bright and enhance the bone structure. We can use Stay Quirky Highlighter and Illuminator once we know how to apply a highlighter on the face perfectly. This lightweight formula is easy to blend and gives the skin a perfect finish. It is easy to learn, even for those new to using makeup products.
Steps to Highlight Chin, Eyes and Lips
Step 1
How can we apply a highlighter on the chin, lips and eyes? For that, we should take a highlighting eye shadow brush, put some highlighter on its tip, and press the brush in the corners of the eyelids. A light dusting is enough for subtle highlights, whereas for dramatic effect, it should be applied in layers.
Step 2
The areas beneath the eyebrows catch sufficient light. Therefore, we should sweep a highlighter like Swiss Beauty Fusion Highlighter over the brow bones, ensuring that the majority of the highlighter is on the external edges of the brow bone. For an extra eye-brightening effect, try extending it down towards the eyelid creases.
Step 3
Now, we should dab some blendable and lightweight highlighters like NY Bae Shine Shimmer Highlighter above the upper lip or the Cupid’s bow to give it more attention. We can do this by taking a highlighter on our fingers and pressing it on this area.
Step 4
Next comes the chin. A light dusting of a Bella Voste Luminising Highlighter on and above the chin is enough.
Steps to Highlight Nose, Forehead and Cheeks
Step 1
A foundation and a concealer are required to create a smooth canvas for the highlighter. After that, we should blend the foundation with a makeup brush or sponge and use a concealer for extra coverage to hide minor imperfections and dark circles.
Step 2
We can use a blush brush to apply a highlighter like Sugar Cosmetics Glow and Behold Jelly Highlighter from the temples to the cheekbone top in a C- shape. For an elusive effect, one layer is enough, and for an intense effect, several layers are needed.
Step 3
Now, taking some highlighter on the fingertip, we should dab it onto the tip of the nose and blend it perfectly.
Step 4
Now, it is time to highlight the centre of the forehead. We should start at the centre of the hairline on the forehead and then sweep straight towards the nose bridge.
Where to Use Highlighters
It’s not just the cheekbones that can be accentuated with a highlighter. Going beyond that is necessary to get a cohesive and natural appearance.
- The Cheekbones
The cheekbones are the most common areas to highlight. Applying a light coat of highlighter on the cheekbones will lend the face a lifted appearance while enhancing the bone structure.
- The Nose Bridge
Highlighting the nose bridge is important for bringing attention to where the light naturally hits the face - at high points. And since the nose bridge is the highest point on the face, adding a highlighter there makes sense. But we should blend out the highlighter well, so that there are no harsh lines down the nose.
- The Cupid’s Bow
The Cupid’s Bow is the curved part at the centre of the top lip. Using a highlighter in this area lifts the lips and offers them a more defined and fuller shape.
Apart from the Cupid’s Bow, cheekbones and nose bridge, we can use a highlighter on the brow bones, inner corners of the eyes, centre of the eyelids and centre of the chin. And, we can get top-quality highlighters within an affordable range on Purplle. Check them out!
