Healthy skin is the pursuit of every person. A fairer, glowing skin, free of acne and other skin conditions needs a daily skincare and makeup routine. Fairer skin is the result of a disciplined approach to skincare and this of course also means inculcating a few habits that will turn over time into a routine. Our skin turns dark, due to overexposure to the sun and the overproduction of a pigment called melanin. Fairer skin therefore depends on sun and melanin control, in conjunction with a cleansing, toning and moisturising routine.
A note on sunscreen: There is an old proverb that says, ‘prevention is better than cure.’ Nowhere is it more apt than in the case of fairness. The sun plays an important role in skin darkening and wearing sunscreen, especially in our ‘forever sunny’ climes is of great importance. Skin experts recommend using sunscreen every day, irrespective of whether or not we step out of the house. Sunscreen reduces the chances of skin darkening considerably and adds efficacy to our existing skincare routines.
Cleansing with a facewash: This is one of the most important steps in a skincare routine. There are specially formulated facewashes that are designed to lighten skin. Many of them contain citric acid and other ‘fairness’ agents that lighten and cleanse the skin with every wash. The recommended frequency of face washing is ideally at 2-3 times a day, depending on how often you step out into the sun.
Toning: Toning means the removal of unseen impurities and buffing of the skin to leave it feeling supple and cleansed. Toners also conceal spots and visible colourants, leaving your skin looking brighter. As a step, toning must be done as soon as you cleanse your face. The frequency of toning, using a skin toner is once a day, ideally in the morning.
Moisturising: The sun can steal moisture along with wreaking havoc on your skin tone. This therefore calls for serious moisturizing, all year round. In the context of fairness, moisturisers often times have fairness ingredients in them. Moisturisers using milk or lactic acid as their base make for excellent conditioners and lightening agents for the skin as well.
Fairness Creams: Most fairness creams have a base of either lactic acid or salicylic that are known to, over time lighten the skin. What fairness creams do is that they dull the melanin production of the skin and thus make it fairer. Many fairness creams also have spot removers in them, which also help in the lightening of skin.
Makeup for a fairer complexion: Here are a few handy tips for using makeup to look fairer, especially for a special occasion.
